The OCLC CORC (Cooperative Online Resource Catalog) research project represents the most ambitious project yet undertaken by the OCLC Office of Research. It is significant both in the reach of its technical objectives and the breadth of the involvement by the participating libraries. The enthusiasm OCLC member libraries are bringing to the project is overwhelming.

We at OCLC strongly believe that libraries must serve as the portal of choice for their users' access to the digital information environment. This is vital for libraries to fulfill their societal role in enhancing access to information. It is also important because libraries can do this better than any other institution.

The CORC project is a joint effort of OCLC and an international collection of pioneering libraries to create a foundation on which libraries will build services that provide their users with outstanding access to all resources, both physical and digital.--Terry Noreault is vice president, OCLC Office of Research.
