Organization
In the early 1970s, three US universities and the New York Public Library created a new kind of practical resource-sharing consortium, which incorporated in 1975 as The Research Libraries Group, Inc. (RLG). Over several decades, RLG grew to include an international array of virtually every type of cultural memory institution—universities, national libraries, archives, historical societies, museums—all with remarkable collections for research and learning.
On July 1, 2006, RLG combined with OCLC, forming a distinct group within the OCLC Programs and Research division. We continue to attract cultural heritage institutions of all types as partners of RLG Programs.
Former RLG services are being migrated to OCLC, a process that is expected to be complete by summer 2007. For more, see RLG-OCLC Transition.
The offices of RLG Programs are in Mountain View, California, approximately seven miles south of Stanford University.
The RLG Program Council and the RLG Committee of the OCLC Board of Trustees are responsible for oversight of RLG Programs' directions.
RLG Programs has about 13 staff, including the vice president, RLG Program Development, program officers, and administrative support staff. The group will expand to include dedicated communications and other relevant staff.
Communication
During the year of transition (July 2006 through June 2007), communication with RLG partners will be regular and as frequent as possible, through e-mailed updates from the vice president, group e-mail to working and advisory groups, revisions to the Web site, individual phone calls and e-mail, and in-person meetings at partner institutions, RLG Programs events, and professional conferences.
Partner updates are posted on this Web site. Please feel free to contact any RLG Programs staff member whenever you have a question or wish to communicate directly.
