Shipping and Handling

A standard shipping/handling charge is made for any publication not listed as "no charge." In the US, this charge is $9.00 for the first item in a shipment plus $2 each for additional items in the same shipment. Internationally, the charge is $29 for the first item and $8 for additional items in the same shipment. This charge is additional to any base price listed for the title.

Published jointly by RLG and the Digital Library Federation, a Web-based reference created by experts in the art and science of digital imaging of visual resources (original photographs, prints, drawings, maps, etc.). Designed to serve museums, archives, and research libraries that are turning to digital conversion to provide greater access to their collections, these guides fill a gap in the literature for serious digital imaging projects, providing the kind of concrete advice for digitizing visual resources that other publications have provided for text and text with images.

Softbound, 80-page guide to creating bibliographic records for Chinese rare book holdings to share in union catalogs, regardless of the library system used. Bilingual in Chinese and English, with examples from records created using RLIN®. Under the editorial direction of Sören Edgren at Princeton, the Guidelines grew out of a project to create an international union catalog of Chinese rare books in the RLG Union Catalog.

A concise but comprehensive guide to the major forms of magnetic and optical storage media in which scholarly/research information is held in libraries and archives; their long-term management and care; and the elements of successful magnetic/optical media preservation reformatting projects, from start to finish. Funded through a generous grant from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, and written by James Wheeler with contributions from Robin Dale. This work brings the approach of RLG's earlier preservation microfilming manuals to bear on audio/video preservation needs, and addresses reliable methods of reformatting and preserving information stored on magnetic and optical media. RLG Archives Microfilming Manual: $45

Spiral-bound, 216-page guide intended for use by library preservation administrators and filming service bureau staff. Contains the RLG guidelines for monographs and serials (prefilming, targeting, and filming technical requirements). Appendices address implementation issues faced by libraries mounting filming projects—from a sample request for proposals, to operational impact, to identifying defects in camera negatives.


Symposium Proceedings

Guidelines for Digital Imaging: A Joint RLG-NPO Preservation Conference
1998; offered on the Web.
Papers from an international conference held 28-30 September 1998 at the University of Warwick and co-hosted by RLG and the National Preservation Office, with generous support from the UK Office for Library and Information Networking and Joint Information Systems Committee. This event brought together preservation specialists and digital project managers to address guidelines for materials selection, preparation, and image capture, plus preservation metadata issues and best practices in digital preservation.

Enhancing Access to Primary Sources Internationally
1997; only offered on the Web.
Proceedings from a symposium held jointly by RLG and the Consortium of University Research Libraries (CURL) on September 24, 1996, in London. This event was designed for information-sharing as a basis for future cooperative efforts among RLG's North American and overseas members. The 65 participants represented institutions responsible for and concerned about access to archives, special collections, manuscripts, rare books, museum objects, artworks, and other rare or unique cultural material.

Local Access to Global Collections: A Joint RLG-CURL Symposium on International Resource Sharing
1997; only offered on the Web.
Proceedings from a symposium held jointly by RLG and the Consortium of University Research Libraries (CURL) on September 23, 1996, in London. This event was designed to explore the similarities and differences in the resource-sharing context for RLG members on each side of the Atlantic; and to consider how RLG and its members could improve their users' access to international collections. Participants represented collection development, public/readers' services, and interlibrary loan/delivery services in North American and European research libraries.

New! Trusted Digital Repositories: Attributes and Responsibilities (PDF)

Final report from an international working group charged by RLG and OCLC to arrive at a definition and consensus on the characteristics of a sustainable digital repository for large-scale, heterogeneous research collections. The resulting 62-page document addresses the seven attributes such repositories must have; discusses requisite responsibilities at both the higher organizational/curatorial level and the operational level; looks at how repositories can be certified; and makes seven key recommendations.

New! Preservation Metadata and the OAIS Information Model—A Metadata Framework to Support the Preservation of Digital Objects (PDF)

Final report of an expert working group charged by OCLC and RLG to examine current practice in the use of preservation metadata and develop a comprehensive preservation metadata framework. (Preservation metadata is the information infrastructure necessary to support processes associated with the long-term retention of digital resources and is an essential component of most digital preservation systems.) This 54-page document is a guide to metadata applicable to a broad range of digital preservation activities. It represents the consensus of leading experts and practitioners and is intended for use by organizations and institutions managing, or planning to manage, the long-term retention of digital resources.

Digital Preservation Needs and Requirements in RLG Member Institutions

A study commissioned by RLG on the status of digital archiving in its member institutions. Presents findings from a survey in which 54 institutions participated. Designed to assist RLG in assessing where—and what kind of—guidance, education and training, storage, and digital preservation are most needed. Conducted by Margaret Hedstrom and Sheon Montgomery at the School of Information, University of Michigan.

Preserving Digital Information: Report of the Task Force on Archiving of Digital Information
1996; only offered on the Web.
Final report of a task force cosponsored by the Commission on Preservation and Access (CPA) and RLG to "frame the key problems that need to be resolved ... to ensure continuing access to electronic records indefinitely into the future"; define the critical inhibiting issues in solving these problems and recommend action on each; consider alternatives to "technology refreshing" as an acceptable approach; and make other appropriate recommendations on the general subject.

AMIS: Archives and Museum Information Service Demonstration: $20 (includes s/h)

A 35-minute VHS videotape documenting the design and intended functionality of RLG's AMIS project at the point it was ended for lack of necessary development funding.
