Typically the public, planners and decision makers are presented with
- many sources of both high quality and poor quality information and don’t know where to go
- no assurance of the quality of the information that they can find
- no confirmation that they have a comprehensive response
...used ineffectually...
This in turn prevents users and service providers from matching up
- The council planner cannot find the policy documents
- The family cannot find their nearest child care service
- Young people cannot find local careers advice
...is inefficient.
It is this conjunction between users and information providers that should be enabled successfully. Without it,
- time is wasted in creating services which are underused
- money and effort is used inefficiently and ineffectually
The result... end users are not well served
This is because some search engines,
- poorly rank and bury information from local sources
- ignore information in “legacy” databases, as it is not web based, not standards based, or maintained remotely
Resolving this is a considerable task, especially when this involves finding, retrieving and assimilating disparate types and formats of information.
Some systems simply concentrate on providing information, not on getting users together with the services and amenities that they need and pay for.
