Efficient resource sharing for networked libraries
VDX is the resource sharing solution from OCLC PICA for groups of libraries. This option will benefit groups that need greater local control of resource sharing with tight integration to disparate local library systems. It builds on the foundation of existing services for groups that include cataloguing, resource sharing, reference and digitisation services. It also expands the benefits of group catalogues by fully automating the requesting and supply of books and journal articles.
Intelligent, automatic request routing matches requests to libraries’ preferred suppliers, selecting alternatives based on material availability. The result: reduced interlibrary loan turnaround times due to automation of the ILL management process, plus Web visibility of group collections and services through OCLC’s WorldCat.org search box, the WorldCat Local pilot and the Open WorldCat partner program.
Physical and electronic discovery and delivery for any format
VDX follows automatic rules based on item format that enables automatic request processing and is integrated into scanning and electronic delivery software, including Infotrieve’s Ariel system. Request input is streamlined through population of requests directly from search results. Access to serials at the issue level means fast, accurate fulfillment.
Integration with local systems
VDX uses NCIP, SIP or SIP2 to integrate tightly with your library management circulation system. VDX can also report on real-time holdings data. Workflow integration across interlibrary loan and circulation functions reduces repetitive and redundant tasks.
Reliability, ease and speed
The VDX option for groups provides transparent real-time searching of multiple library systems and intelligent management of the entire discovery-to-delivery process. The option of hosting means no additional hardware for your staff to purchase or support, and scalability to support the expanding needs of your group. Developed by the former Fretwell-Downing organisation (now part of OCLC PICA), VDX software offers the reliability and speed that library groups need and expect to serve their users effectively.
Regional implementations
Canada
VDXHost offers VDX benefits on a hosted service basis. Currently available in Canada, this service makes it cost effective for libraries with lower transaction numbers to get the benefits of VDX.
