New Beginnings
The decision to choose New Beginnings as the theme of this issue is fairly apparent. In addition to ushering in the New Year, we are introducing the revised format for the Newsletter. We are also changing the focus of the Newsletter to better serve our customers: State government employees, librarians, library staff, trustees, and Ohio residents.
Our articles this month examine new beginnings: New services, new ways to provide services, and ways in which the State Library can attend to your needs that may be new to you.
State Librarian’s Report
It is hard to believe that it has only been six months since I became State Librarian of Ohio (still feels like a dream come true!). At the same time I feel like I have been here much longer than six months. In this short time I have learned so much from the Ohio library community and about the library community. During this time I have mastered many of our acronyms but have resisted the temptation to create any new ones. I cannot promise that I will be able to continue resisting this temptation; how many librarians can?
So why is the theme of this issue of our newsletter "New Beginnings" (besides, of course, that this is the January issue)?
Since I came, we have undergone many changes at the State Library. Some are in response to the budget cuts we have experienced, others are directly related to our desire to better serve our customers: librarians, library staff, trustees, state government employees and Ohio residents. The changes you see in this newsletter are due to the latter.
The newsletter will continue to provide information about the State Library but will also provide information about the library community. We look forward to hearing from you about your library and your customers. We would like to feature stories of special services, the application of cutting–edge technology, and stories of how Ohio libraries of all types are providing exemplary service to their customers.
We are also anxious to spread the word of our service to state government and about the good work that is done by state government agency libraries. As we explore ways to enhance the service we offer to state government employees, we will share our plans in this newsletter. Some of these enhancements may pique interest across various types of libraries and lead to changes elsewhere in the state.
We welcome your feedback and suggestions about the changes that you will find in this issue of the State Library of Ohio News. Please send these to Jane Byrnes, Public Information Officer, at jbyrnes@sloma.state.oh.us
