It's fun to see the most popular items added to WorldCat, but these items are almost always kids' books, typically fiction. How about stats for different audiences: juvenile versus non-juvenile, fiction versus non-fiction? Or, what new DVDs are being added (maybe broken down by audience)? That might give more types of people reasons to check out their libraries.

Thanks for your feedback Gary. We are looking in to other interesting offerings within the recent items area, such as the ones you suggested above.

I concur with Gary - especially since young folks are less likely to be seraching for theses kinds of things online. If you catalog DVDs then you would be onto something.

Why do recent additions stop at 500 for libraries? Are these the first 500 or the last 500 added for the month?

Hi CRaig. In the "recent additions" lists for libraries, each list shows the most popular 500 items of the materials that a library adds to WorldCat the previous month. WorldCat determines popularity by the number of libraries who own an item.

I would like to see a list of recent items by young adult available as an RSS feed for our library young adult blogs.
Thanks.

Is there documentation anywhere about how these lists are created and how often and when they are updated?

It would be helpful to know more about the process in order to decide whether we want to link to our library's list of recent items added. Thanks.

Hi hbpl & Debbie,
Thanks for inquiring about the recent items feature on WorldCat.org. This feature is still in the early stages - and we are working to evolve it over the upcoming months.
- We are working on creating breakdowns of this list, such as fiction, young adult, etc.
- Currently, the lists are updated monthly, we are working to increase this frequency to weekly (if not more often).
- As Alice noted in an earlier comment, the lists show the most popular 500 items that the library has set holdings on in WorldCat in the past month. Popularity is determined by the number of other WorldCat libraries that also own the item.

Please let us know what other things would be valuable for you within this feature. For example, what other info would be helpful in the RSS feed?
