Cook Library at Towson University. David, one of the Emerging Technologies Librarians on staff, put together a few simple steps that outline how to create a WorldCat list and then how to get that list onto your WorldCat list widget.

Built by Wade Guidry of the Collins Memorial Library at the University of Puget Sound, the mashup uses Yahoo Pipes, to let Puget Sound library users find New York Times Best sellers for hardcover nonfiction, paperback nonfiction, and hardcover fiction via RSS feeds. It makes a lot of sense, if you're looking to see what the rest of the U.S. thinks is worth reading--from titles available at your library.

A nice touch in their catalog, too, is the library map display. So when you find an item you're interested in, it shows you the handy schematic of where you find it in the library building. I know all too well the woes of wandering all over, looking at call numbers on shelves in an unfamiliar library location.

While we won't be able to include that level of granularity on WorldCat.org for a long time (!) Wade's mashup shows how putting two things together, with a little developer elbow grease, can really create a super useful tool that more than doubles the value. (Of course, since he's a WorldCat Mashathon alumni, would we expect anything less?)

Lots of interest around the recent inclusion of library results in the RedLaser iPhone app. We've been playing around with it, too, and made a quick 43 second video of how it works, just in case you don't have an iPhone:

WorldCat.org results are made possible through the WorldCat Search API and WorldCat Registry APIs. More about both of these tools in the Web Services for developers area. Note that right now RedLaser serves up results for books in the U.S. It's not that we (WorldCat) or they (Occipital) don't want to serve up more results for videos, CDs, DVDs, games, magazines--all the content a library offers (no matter where in the world you or your library is)--but they're trying to walk before they run, and run before they fly. We all look forward to flying with RedLaser.

In the meantime, remember the WorldCat Mobile pilot is still available for ANY Web-enabled phone in the UK, France, Germany, Netherlands, Canada and the US. If your phone doesn't support apps, there is a Web "lite" version that comes up. Plus we're also simultaneously exploring how to make the whole site itself, WorldCat.org, more mobile-friendly so you can have your profile, lists and everything else at hand, in your hand.

Initially the post looks like a standard book review of Allison Hoover Bartlett's book, The Man Who Loved Books Too Much. You can read more and get an excerpt on the story from the NPR story "Literary Larceny"--which we liked so much we stole the title for our post, too.

But once you read the comments, the WorldCat-interesting-ness starts to unfold. Apparently the FBI used WorldCat in order to help catch literary thieves--and OCLC (the library cooperative who helps maintain WorldCat) created a video in 1990 to tell the tale. The video (VHS) is called "The Omaha Project: A Rare Book Adventure" and is available in more than 546 libraries around the world. The summary is as follows:

Four OCLC staff members and 40 volunteers use [WorldCat,] the OCLC database [,] to help the FBI inventory more than 20,000 stolen rare books and manuscripts allegedly stolen by Stephen C. Blumberg and help locate their possible owners.

How cool is that! WorldCat even helps track down criminals. Who knew?

Now anyone and everyone can create apps and mash-ups using library data from WorldCat, because the WorldCat Basic API is here!

This new API is a simple interface to WorldCat. It's envisioned to be most useful for lightweight or mobile apps, developed by people outside the library space. Still, anyone is welcome to build noncommercial services with it. [Commercial services are also welcome, but they must go through the WorldCat partnership team to gain access.]

It supports up to 1,000/queries per day in OpenSearch and retrieves results in RSS or Atom. It also provides:

Information about books, videos, music and more in WorldCat

Information about authors, titles, ISBNs and OCLC numbers

Standard bibliographic citation formats in HTML (APA, Chicago, Harvard, MLA, and Turabian)

A link back to WorldCat.org for geographically-sorted library information

An easy way to include library results in comparison-shopping Web sites, mobile or Facebook apps

To gain access to the WorldCat Basic API, select the WorldCat Basic API on the WorldCat Affiliates Tools page. Sign in with your WorldCat Affiliates account and then you'll be taken to a specific site where your individual WS Key will be auto-generated. If you already have a WorldCat Search API WSKey, then you do NOT need a WorldCat Basic API WSKey.

By making the collective library data in WorldCat as accessible as possible to ALL developers, we hope to generate more awareness and traffic to libraries in general. Which is really good for everybody, isn't it?

Happy coding! We'll be excited to see what new and interesting apps and mashups you create!

Two additional databases called PapersFirst and ProceedingsFirst have now also been added to WorldCat.org results. These two indexes contain papers from conferences, symposiums and expositions worldwide. Created from items received by The British Library Document Supply Centre--you'll find 7.4 million published items in English, French, Spanish and Chinese.

If you track specific conferences, or do in-depth research on specific topics, these materials can bring depth and richness to your research. See a sample listing below for representative PapersFirst and ProceedingsFirst items:
