WorldCat Search API
One big issue with library user interfaces is that print and electronic materials are listed seperately and there isn't a good way to see from a record for one if the library has the other. This script uses the WorldCat Search API to see if a print version of an electronic book exists at a given library and then builds a link to it. Demonstrated in a library catalog and also a electronic resource list from Serial Solutions
- WorldCat Map Mashup
This script demonstrates a Google map showing libraries with a particular item from Worldcat. When a marker is clicked on it brings up the name of the library and a link the item in that library's catalog.
- Enter an OCLC Number 179793524
- Enter a Zip Code 77062
- Search Mockup
This script demonstrates a simple search of the Worldcat database with a results list that incorporates covers and ratings from other sources (OpenLibrary and LibraryThing)
- Similar Items
This script demonstrates how to use Dewey Decimal Classification information to retrieve a list of similar items at a given institution via the WorldCat Search API.
- Subject Timeline
This demonstration builds a Similie timeline based on results from a subject search in WorldCat API. Timeline starts with earliest publications and shows 50 publications at a time.
The example is "global warming".
- Catalog Keyword Search Box Builder
One task that many small libraries can find daunting is embedding a keyword search box for their library catalog into their library website. This script helps make that easier by using the WorldCat Registry to look up a library's ILS Vendor and catalog url. Then based on this information the script builds a keyword search form that can be easily cut and paste into a website.
- Enter a OCLC Symbol
- Registry Contact form
Wouldn't it be great if you came to OCLC and filled out a contact form some of the information was prepopulated? This form let's you search for your library and the select it to have that information added to a contact form.
- Choropleth Map of libraries and state populations
This is a Choropleth map made with Protovis. It shows public libraries per person in each state in the US.
- QR code for library info
This demonstrates how to generate a QR code for a particular library and then when the QR code is scanned the user is taken to a Google Map that shows the library and its basic information.
- Organizational chart of Branches
This is shows a heirachical chart of all the branches for a particular library.
- Author Info

Mobile Catalog Prototype
The idea behind the prototype was to demonstrate how relatively easy it is to build a mobile web interface to a library catalog using OCLC web services. It has grown beyond a simple web interface to become a bit more of a full fledged catalog that demonstrates how various web services can be used to improve library UIs. It incorporates lessons learned from nearly all the code demonstrations listed on this page as well as other non-OCLC web services.
