An evaluation of methods for hypersensitizing mice by W. E Harris( Book )

1 edition published in 1958 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

To obtain high mortality in anaphylactic mice, three treatment conditions were varied: incubation period; inclusion of enhancing agents in sensitizing antigen preparation. Mortality did not vary significantly when the incubation period was 4 or 8 days, but from 14 to 28 days, mortality decreased with increased time. Eleven combinations of solubilized or alum precipitated bovine albumin and pertussis vaccine were tested as sensitizing and challenge preparations. One combination, sensitization with a mixture of bovine albumin and pertussis vaccine, resulted in high mortality. Four other combinations gave moderate mortality, while six gave none. Variation in sensitizing rout (intraperitoneal vs. subcutaneous) gave significantly higher mortality in only one case, that being intraperitoneal sensitization with alum precipitated bovine albumin and pertussis vaccine, and challenge 14 days later with bovine albumin and pertussis vaccine

The effect of exposure to simulated high altitudes on anaphylaxis in mice by W. E Harris( Book )

1 edition published in 1958 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A study was made of the way acute and prolonged exposure to simulated high altitude affects anaphylaxis in mice. Mortality at 15 minutes and at 4 hours after challenge was found to be higher in groups of mice exposed to 20,000 feet altitude in comparable groups treated at ground level. Hematocrit change in anaphylactic mice exposed to 20,000 feet did not differ significantly from that mice treated at ground level. In mice maintained at 15,000 feet simulated altitude for 15 days, neither hematocrit change nor mortality following challenge was significantly different from that of mice treated at ground level

Military compensation and the all-volunteer force : lessons learned by W. E Harris( Book )

4 editions published in 1994 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This thesis traces the development of the compensation program for the All-Volunteer Force, 1973-1993, through a 'lessons learned' approach. Eighteen lessons are highlighted in the study. The thesis describes the concepts behind the All-Volunteer Force and the philosophic rationale for the development of the compensation program. It analyzes, compares, and contrasts two major compensation approaches, called market and institutional. Consideration is also given to compensation standardization techniques of pay comparability and pay competitiveness. The thesis concludes with a discussion of issues pertinent to future compensation studies

The globular cluster system of the Sombrero galaxy by Marcel L VanDalfsen( )

1 edition published in 2004 in English and held by 0 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Deep, wide-field images in B and R-band from the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) are used to study the globular cluster system (GCS) of the Sombrero galaxy (also known as M104). M104 is a nearby (9 Mpc) spiral galaxy of type Sa, viewed nearly edge-on. The major properties of the system investigated are the globular cluster luminosity function (GCLF), colour distribution or metallicity distribution function (MDF), the spatial distribution, and the total population of globular clusters. The data extend nearly two magnitudes past the GCLF turnover magnitudes, which are measured to be B0 = 23.09 +/- 0.12 and R0 = 21.78 +/- 0.10. The colour distribution is found to be bimodal in structure, with peaks at (B - R) 0 = 1.22 +/- 0.02 and (B - R)0 = 1.50 +/- 0.04. The colour distribution is also converted into a metallicity or abundance distribution, to which is fit a two-phase accreting-box chemical enrichment model. Spatially, the GCS is found to be nearly round, and having a general power-law shape radially. A global power-law index of alpha = -1.32 +/- 0.06 is found for the entire system, but for the two populations an index of alpha = -1.05 +/- 0.04 and alpha = -1.70 +/- 0.09 is found for the blue and red populations respectively. As a system, the Sombrero galaxy is estimated to have a total population of Ncl = 2000 +/- 200, with a corresponding specific frequency of SN = 2.3 +/- 0.2. Overall, the GCS of M104 is found to be normal, though large for a spiral galaxy

The metallicity distribution function of globular clusters systems through near-infrared photometry by Waldemar M. M Okón( )

1 edition published in 2005 in English and held by 0 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

New, deep, wide-field photometry in the K-band obtained with the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Infrared Camera (CFHT-IR) is used in combination with archival V and I-band data from the Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (HST-WFPC2) to study the globular cluster systems (GCSs) of eight elliptical galaxies of various luminosities. These include the Leo Group galaxies NGC 3377 and 3379, Virgo Galaxy Cluster galaxies M 60, M 86, M 89, as well as the giant elliptical M 87. Two other galaxies, NGC 2768 in Ursa Major and NGC 3608 in Leo are also studied. Combining the new CFHT-IR data with archival HST-WFPC2 data, V - K colours, which are significantly more sensitive to metallicity than the commonly used V - I colour indices, are derived
