"Here is a volume that generations of readers have longed for - the first-ever selection from the letters of Dashiell Hammett, the onetime private detective who, in five astonishing books written between 1927 and 1933, invented the modern American crime novel. Hammett was not only the founding member of the hardboiled school, he also was its greatest practitioner, and even after Chandler and all the rest, his body of work remains the solid-gold standard. The best of his work is literature - without the quotation marks."--Jacket

The Giant Collection of the Continental Op by Dashiell Hammett( )

1 edition published in 2018 in English and held by 22 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Essential tales from the files of San Francisco's hard-bitten, prototypical PI-penned by the undisputed "master of the detective novel" (The Boston Globe). Before Dashiell Hammett introduced such iconic sleuths as Sam Spade in The Maltese Falcon or Nick and Nora Charles in The Thin Man, he put to work the most influential detective ever to scour America's hard-boiled literary landscape. An operative of San Francisco's Continental Detective Agency, the Continental Op was a world-weary, pragmatic, and inelegant company man-and though always nameless, he has remained as distinctive as a fingerprint. Informed by Hammett's own work with the Pinkertons, the twenty-three stories collected here-originally published between 1923 and 1930-introduced a bracing, jaded, dry-witted realism to the genre. Written with "the precision of a diamond cutter," they are seminal masterworks in the legacy of a genuine original (Newsweek)

But when she finally surfaces in San Francisco, she becomes the Continental Op's problem'the deadliest problem he will ever have. Heroes of Hollywood's left tribe : analysis of the memorials for Adrian Scott, John Howard Lawson, and Albert Maltz by Julie M Rivett( Book )

1 edition published in 2013 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Abstract: Adrian Scott, John Howard Lawson, and Albert Maltz were three of the storied Hollywood Ten, screenwriters who refused to bend under questioning in 1947 by the House Committee on Un-American Activities. This three-level analysis of audio recordings of their memorial services offers insights into images of the three, rhetorical practices of their community, and traditions of the American left. First, reviews of history, biography, and circumstance ground and contextualize the study. Second, Kenneth Burke's theories on representation illuminate the memorials' essential protagonists, narratives, and consequent rhetorical utility. Third, Walter R. Fisher's motive view of communication points to underlying motivations and tactics. Findings suggest that the memorialized images of Scott, Lawson, and Maltz support Hollywood's left community by providing justification, inspiration, and admonition. Implications for the rhetoric of dissenting communities emerge in the light of material and rhetorical parallels between these three champions and ancient Celtic tribal heroes
