A detailed look into the claustrophobic and terrifying world of a German U-boat crew hunting ships from under the sea. Gritty, realistic, and peppered with black humour, this is one of the few sympathetic portrayals of the war from the German side to be released in western distribution

3 editions published in 2007 in German and held by 512 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
After spending four years in prison for killing his girlfriend, lumbering man-child Franz Biberkopf is finally released back into society. He wants to stay honest now he has left jail, but it is tough in the Alexanderplatz section of Berlin. After failing to succeed in several 'regular' jobs, he falls in with some old cohorts and an on-again, off-again association with thugs. Post-war society is crumbling, and it appears that nothing will bring it back. Originally made for television, Berlin Alexanderplatz is a prototype for the modern long-form drama, grandfather to Tony and the Sopranos

)
2 editions published between 1978 and 2003 in German and held by 200 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The first of a trilogy about women in post-World War II Germany, The marriage of Maria Braun, turns the melodramatic story of the titular heroine's climb up the economic ladder into a historical allegory about both the post-war German "economic miracle" and 1970s West Germany. During the allied siege of Germany in the last year of the war, Maria's new husband is shipped off to the Russian front before the marriage is consummated. As she struggles to survive wartime deprivations, Maria haunts the local train station, seeking out information concerning her husband. When it appears that she's a widow, Maria takes a job as a barmaid and befriends a black soldier from the occupying allied troops, who sees to it that Maria's family receives vital food and supplies. The opportunistic Maria eventually takes a job with a wealthy importer, building herself up to a position of power and indispensability

"Franz Biberkopf is an unforgettable man: his tender, good-natured side contradicted by moments of shocking violence. Released from prison following a four year sentence for the manslaughter of his girlfriend, he plans to make a new start and a decent life for himself. But the chaotic, decadent Berlin of the 20's is not the easiest place for an ex-con to go straight and work is hard to come by. When Franz becomes fascinated by Reinhold, a psychotic small-time crook, he is soon drawn back into a world he cannot escape. Fassbinder's staggering 15-hour epic is a monument of late 20th-century filmmaking and considered to be the director's masterpiece. Following a massive restoration project overseen by the original editor, it is now available for the first time on DVD."--Container

In einem Jahr mit 13 Monden: Elvira Weishaupt began life as Erwin. After growing up in an orphanage, Erwin was apprenticed to a butcher. As an adult, Erwin had fallen in love with Anton, the manager of the slaughterhouse where he worked. Anton's offhand comment "too bad you're not a girl" sent Erwin to Casablanca to become Elvira. Upon her return, however, Anton rejects Elvira. Convincing neither as a man nor as a woman, to others or to herself, she begins a journey into her past, revisiting old haunts, trying to re-or de-construct the person she's become. In a Year of 13 Moons is a distilled, brutal, unrelenting, deeply personal, and emotionally honest exposition into the human existential quest for love, acceptance, spiritual passion, and inclusion

"In the little town of Herzsprung whose name can mean either heartbreak, or heart leap, almost nothing has changed since German unification. Nothing, that is, except a rise in unemployment. Johanna, a young mother and widow, is one of the unemployed and has to live on welfare. To make matters worse, she falls in love with a dark-skinned, roving adventurer and the whole village is talking about it"--Container
