"The Social Movements Reader is an extensive collection of the key classic and contemporary readings on the origins, organization, dynamics, and effects of social movements. These essays analyze the specific resources, networks, structures, and environments of social movements, as well as the motivating psychology, political debates, emotions, and personal and collective identities behind them. The book includes several case studies of some of the most important social movements, including the civil rights, women's, and environmental movements." "Chapter introductions, brief biographers, and definitions of key concepts guide readers to a clear understanding of the essays. For anyone curious about social movements, this is an engaging and illuminating compilation."--Jacket

Contention in context : political opportunities and the emergence of protest by James M Jasper( )

12 editions published between 2011 and 2012 in English and held by 882 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Despite extensive theoretical debates over the utility of "political opportunities" as an explanation for the rise and success of social movements, there have been surprisingly few serious empirical tests. Contention in Context provides the most extensive effort to date to test the model, analyzing a range of important cases of revolutions and protest movements to identify the role of political opportunities in the rise of political contention. With evidence from more than fifty cases, this book explores the role of the state in protest, the frequent overemphasis on political opportunities in recent research, and the extent to which opportunity models ignore the cultural and emotional triggers for collective action. By examining new directions in the study of protest and contention, this book shows that although political opportunities can help explain the emergence of certain kinds of movements, a new strategic language can ultimately tell us far more. -- Book Description
No other way out : states and revolutionary movements, 1945-1991 by Jeff Goodwin( Book )

16 editions published between 2001 and 2006 in English and held by 588 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"No Other Way Out: States and Revolutionary Movements, 1945-1991 provides an explanation for the emergence of popular revolutionary movements, and the occurrence of actual revolutions, during the Cold War era. This sweeping study ranges from Southeast Asia in the 1940s and 1950s to Central America in the 1970s and 1980s and Eastern Europe in 1989. Following in the "state-centered" tradition of Theda Skocpol's States and Social Revolutions, Goodwin demonstrates how the actions of specific types of authoritarian regimes unwittingly channeled popular resistance into radical and often violent directions. Revolution became the "only way out," to use Trotsky's formulation, for the opponents of these intransigent regimes. By comparing the historical trajectories of more than a dozen countries, Goodwin also shows how revolutionaries were sometimes able to create, and not simply exploit, opportunities for seizing state power."--Jacket
