Economic policy and sustainable land use : recent advances in quantitative analysis for developing countries( Book )

6 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 190 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book provides an overview of quantitative approaches to analyse the effects of economic policy reforms on sustainable land use in less developed countries (LDCs). Its purpose is to assess recent advances in modelling approaches, to identify key issues in quantifying the relationships, and to formulate recommendations on future research directions that may add to further improve our understanding of the potential effects of economic policy instruments on soil quality changes in LDCs. Special attention is paid to modelling the responses of farm households to policy incentives

Village modeling : a Chinese recipe for blending general equilibrium and household modeling by Marijke Kuiper( Book )

4 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The transformation of China into an outward-looking and increasingly industrialized country resulted in unprecedented growth rates. Benefits of economic growth, however, have not been distributed evenly and rising income inequality threatens social stability and future growth. High urban incomes attract a large number of rural migrants, transmitting the rising income inequalities to rural villages. This study provides the first quantitative analysis of the impact of rural-urban migration on a Chinese village economy. Existing village models do not reflect findings of the household literature on the importance of market imperfections. Prevailing imperfections in factor markets in rural China, however, necessitate an analysis that takes into account the nonseparability of household production and consumption decisions. This study therefore develops a methodology for analyzing interactions among households in a village economy, that bridges the current gap between household and village models. The resulting model is able to capture the impact of market imperfections on household decisions, as well as the impact of household decisions on other households in the village. Applying this model to a village in Jiangxi Province allows us to analyze the impact of rural-urban migration on households with and without access to migration
Science for agriculture and rural development in low-income countries by Reimund P Roetter( )

4 editions published between 2007 and 2008 in English and Undetermined and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Since 1998, the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature Management and Food Quality (LNV) promotes development-orientated agricultural and environmental research and strengthening of North-South partnerships through its International Cooperation (DLO-IC) research programme. By 2005, some 70 collaborative North-South projects had been carried out. All science groups in Wageningen University and Research Centre (WUR) were involved in the implementation of the programme and at least half the projects and activities undertaken were directly related to Rural Development and Sustainable Agriculture (R
EU-India free trade agreement : a quantitative assessment by T Achterbosch( Book )

3 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This report analyses the effects of a regional trade agreement (FTA) between the EU and India, for which negotiations are underway. The study starts with abrief overview of the key insights from the existing literature on FTAs and their relationship with multilateral negotiations. The remainder of the study is devoted to analysing the impact of tariff slashes under an FTA on merchandise trade between the EU and India. Of particular interest are the implications for agricultural markets, given the tension between agricultural liberalisation and India's policy goals relating to self-sufficiency in food grains and poverty reduction. The analysis employs GTAP, a global general equilibrium model using a recent database which has 2004 as its reference year. The results suggest that India's interests in a regional trade agreement with the EU are downplayed by the fact that India's economy is not well integrated in global markets. Impacts on the EU are minor and further reduced if a Doha agreement is in place when the FTA is implemented. Results indicate the rationale for a strongly asymmetric arrangement: it would be in the interest of both partners if the EU provides large concessions to India for market access, while India maintains the bulk of current border protection. An EU - India FTA delivers little scope for achieving efficiency gains via adjustments to the pattern of international specialisation. An EU - India agreement on merchandise trade is unlikely to embody substantial preferential treatment with regard to market access. Probably, India can find more suitable FTA partners. Agriculture is a key sector for India in the consideration of equity and growth purposes of a FTA with EU

Agricultural market access proposals in the Doha round : Dutch agro-food interest by Marijke Kuiper( Book )

2 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This report analyses the impact of market access proposals tabled in the current WTO Doha round. The first part of the study assesses the 'bite' of tariff reductions by comparing border prices of Dutch products with those of imports before and after implementing tariff reductions. The second part of the study analyses the impact of proposals for sensitive products in terms of tariff rate quota (TRQ) expansion and highlights complexities surrounding the implementation of the proposals
