Computers, phones, and the Internet : domesticating information technology( )

17 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 1,530 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

During the past decade, technology has become more pervasive, encroaching more and more on our lives. Computers, cell phones, and the internet have an enormous influence not only on how we function at work, but also on how we communicate and interact outside the office. Researchers have been documenting the effect that these types of technology have on individuals, families, and other social groups. Their work addresses questions that relate to how people use computers, cell phones, and the internet, how they integrate their use of new technology into daily routines, and how family function, social relationships, education, and socialization are changing as a result. This research is being conducted in a number of countries, by scientists from a variety of disciplines, who publish in very different places. The result is that it is difficult for researchers and students to get a current and coherent view of the research literature. This book brings together the leading researchers currently investigating the impact of information and communication technology outside of the workplace.; Its goal is to develop a consolidated view of what we collectively know in this fast-changing area, to evaluate approaches to data collection and analysis, and to identify future directions for research. The book will appeal to professionals and students in social psychology, human-technology interaction, sociology, and communication

Connections : new ways of working in the networked organization by Lee Sproull( Book )

37 editions published between 1991 and 2001 in English and held by 799 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Computer networking is changing the way people work and the way organizations function. Connections is an accessible guide to the promise and the pitfalls of this latest phase of the computer revolution. The ideas in Connections will help executives shape their vision of a new communication environment. Designers of network systems will see a realistic portrait of the users and uses of their inventions. And those using the technology in their jobs will gain a broader perspective on their work environment. Using experience gained over a decade of research in established electronic mail communities, Lee Sproull and Sara Kiesler show how the new technology can alleviate barriers and distortions in organizational communication and create opportunities for new connections. They also point to the problems it raises and discuss methods for coping with the often profound changes in organizations that accompany moves to computer networking. While each chapter can be read independently, the book follows a historical order, beginning with the social history of nineteenth-century technologies such as the railroad, typewriter, and telephone. Using these older technologies as a framework for thinking about technology changes in organizations, Sproull and Kiester focus on contemporary organizations and contemporary computerbased communication. Topics include the specific kinds of changes that are likely to occur in meetings, in connections among peripheral workers, and in patterns of control and influence. The authors also anticipate long-range changes in organizational procedures and structures, discussing those that are possible with today's technology and those that could occur within the next decade

As we begin a new century, the astonishing spread of nationally and internationally accessible computer-based communication networks has touched the imagination of people everywhere. Suddenly, the Internet is in everyday parlance, featured in talk shows, in special business ""technology"" sections of major newspapers, and on the covers of national magazines. If the Internet is a new world of social behavior it is also a new world for those who study social behavior. This volume is a compendium of essays and research reports representing how researchers are thinking about the social processes o

The objectives of this report are stated in three broad questions that the research committee was asked to examine. (1) What are the principal lines of research being pursued at the present time that are significantly strengthening the scientific foundations of education, and what are some of their possible contributions to American education? Are there some lines of research that appear particularly promising and deserving of higher priority than they are now given? (2) Are current modes of conduct and support of fundamental research relevant to education adequate to ensure its quality and ultimate usefulness to education? If not, how might they be improved? (3) In light of answers to the above, what possible additions to or changes in policy relevant to fundamental research, if any, are recommended for consideration by the National Council on Educational Research or other appropriate bodies?
