History of the world Christian movement by Dale T Irvin( Book )

10 editions published between 2001 and 2012 in English and held by 761 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

:The first volume of this ground-breaking history traced the development of Christianity from its origins up to the midfifteenth century, and won immediate acclaim as a landmark in the unfolding understanding of World Christianity. In place of conventional Eurocentric treatments, this work assigned a rightful place to the peoples of Africa, Asia, and the Near East in the unfolding of Christianity, a religion constantly evolving in dialogue with new cultures, new questions, and new historical influences. Volume II continues the story up to the dawn of the twentieth Century. Beginning with the missionary expansion of the fifteenth century, the story goes on to trace the fracturing of the Christian movement among Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant versions; the impact of modern colonialism and the emergence of a new global reality; the wars of religion, the impact of the Enlightenment, the rise of Christianity in North America, and the modern missionary movement. Throughout, the authors emphasize the expression of local forms of Christianity in diverse cultures, and the role of Christianity in helping to shape distinct national identities. They conclude with a forecast of a new century of globalization." -- Publisher's description

Understanding Christian mission : participation in suffering and glory by Scott W Sunquist( Book )

4 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 185 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This comprehensive introduction helps students, pastors, and mission committees understand contemporary Christian mission historically, biblically, and theologically. Scott Sunquist, a respected scholar and teacher of world Christianity, recovers missiological thinking from the early church for the twenty-first century. He traces the mission of the church throughout history in order to address the global church and offers a constructive theology and practice for missionary work today. Sunquist views spirituality as the foundation for all mission involvement, for mission practice springs from spiritual formation. He highlights the Holy Spirit in the work of mission and emphasizes its trinitarian nature. Sunquist explores mission from a primarily theological--rather than sociological--perspective, showing that the whole of Christian theology depends on and feeds into mission. Throughout the book, he presents Christian mission as our participation in the suffering and glory of Jesus Christ for the redemption of the nations
The unexpected Christian century : the reversal and transformation of global Christianity, 1900-2000 by Scott W Sunquist( Book )

3 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 139 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 1900 many assumed the twentieth century would be a Christian century because Western "Christian empires" ruled most of the world. What happened instead is that Christianity in the West declined dramatically, the empires collapsed, and Christianity's center moved to Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Pacific. How did this happen so quickly? Respected scholar and teacher Scott Sunquist surveys the most recent century of Christian history, highlighting epochal changes in global Christianity. He also suggests lessons we can learn from this remarkable global Christian reversal. Ideal for an introduction to Christianity or a church history course, this book includes a foreword by Mark Noll

The gospel and pluralism today : reassessing Lesslie Newbigin in the 21st century( Book )

2 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 82 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Toward the end of the twentieth century, Lesslie Newbigin offered a penetrating analysis of the challenges of pluralism that confronted a Western culture and society reeling from the dissolution of Christendom. His enormous influence has been felt ever since. Newbigin (1909-1998) was a longtime Church of Scotland missionary to India and later General Secretary of the International Missionary Council and Associate General Secretary of the World Council of Churches. The first installment in the Missiological Engagements series, the essays in this volume explore three aspects of Newbigin's legacy. First, they assess the impact of his 1989 book, Gospel in a Pluralist Society, on Christian mission and evangelism in the West. Second, they critically analyze the nature of Western pluralism in its many dimensions to discern how Christianity can proclaim good news for today. Finally, the contributors discuss the influence of Newbigin's work on the field of missiology. By looking backward, this volume recommends and advances a vision for Christian witness in the pluralistic world of the twenty-first century

Narsai and the Persians : a study in cultural contact and conflict by Scott W Sunquist( )

5 editions published in 1990 in English and held by 10 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Abstract: The following work is a study of the church of Syria in the fifth century in its cultural context--that of Sasanian Persia. Narsai, the head of "The School of the Persians," is taken as the subject as his theology is studied and compared with the theology of his cultural milieu. The twin doctrines of creation and salvation are compared to look for lines of continuity and points of conflict. In the introduction, Narsai's life and the school at Nisibis are studied noting the central role of the head of the school and the nature of the school in the fifth century. Chapter one studies the Zoroastrian theology, focusing on the twin doctrines of creation and salvation. In the end of the chapter the religious life of the Zoroastrian is studied, and then in the appendix asceticism is compared with the Zoroastrian worldview. Chapter two begins the study of Narsai's theology, looking first at his missiological dimension, cultural awareness and then the doctrine of creation. Throughout the chapter his doctrine is compared with the teachings of Zoroastrianism as outlined in chapter one. In chapter three Narsai's doctrine of salvation (including the judgment and eschatology) is studied and compared with that of Zoroastrianism. Chapter four concludes by noting some of the areas of continuity and the areas of conflict between the two theologies. The author concludes by utilizing Weber's concept of elective affinities to suggest that the spread of East Syrian Christianity in the East may have been encouraged by the affinities in specific areas of the world views
