Le 26 décembre 2004, le tsunami le plus destructeur jamais connu frappe le pourtour de l'Océan Indien, ravageant les côtes d'une dizaine de pays et faisant plus de 250 000 victimes. Après cette catastrophe naturelle, l'équipe scientifique franco-indonésienne du programme Tsunarisque se rend dans la région de Banda Aceh en Indonésie pour tenter de mieux connaître le phénomène afin de mieux l'anticiper, un véritable défi pour ce pays qui compte 12 000 km de côtes exposées. Au cours de huit missions successives, les chercheurs du programme Tsunarisque tentent de reconstituer par modélisation le tsunami afin de comprendre son impact sur l'environnement et les sociétés. Ils réalisent un minutieux travail de relevés sur le terrain avant que les traces ne disparaissent. Les objectifs de ce projet répondent aux besoins et aux lacunes révélés par le tsunami en croisant les approches scientifiques, pédagogiques et opérationnelles en matière de prévention des risques. La reconstitution du tsunami de Banda Aceh et de son impact sur les milieux côtiers de Sumatra débouchera sur la mise en place d'une méthode de cartographie des risques, appliquée à la côte sud de Java et sera prolongée par des actions de prévention auprès des populations
