Using these texts to illuminate an important aspect of Graeco-Roman antiquity that has hitherto been difficult to glimpse, this book gives a detailed portrait of a scholarly industry that touched generations of ancient readers from the first century B.C. to the fifth century and beyond."--Jacket

The rhetorical exercises of Nikephoros Basilakes : progymnasmata from twelfth-century Byzantium by Nikēphoros( Book )

7 editions published in 2016 in English and Greek, Ancient and held by 122 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Progymnasmata are literally "exercises" that are "preliminary" to declamation, which is the composition and delivery of ostensibly impromptu speeches in the guise of fictional, mythical, or historical characters who serve as prosecution or defense in fictitious trial scenarios. Basilakes's collection includes highly polished examples of fable, narration, maxim, refutation, confirmation, encomium, and ethopoeia. Basilakes's exercises draw on myth, ancient history, the Bible, and other Christian texts, and they use specific words and phrases from ancient Greek epic, tragedy, historiography, and other genres. The progymnasmata also feature mythological and biblical stories that Basilakes treats more than once, the most obvious example being his handling of the myth of Atalanta as both a refutation and a confirmation. In other cases, however, he revisits stories so as to highlight different perspectives, changes in disposition, and moral dilemmas.--

The feasibility of using pedometers for self‐report of steps and accelerometers for measuring physical activity in adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities across an 18‐month intervention( )

1 edition published in 2017 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Abstract: Background: Improving physical activity in adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs) is recommended to improve weight loss and general health. However, in order to determine the success of physical activity interventions, identification of feasible methods for assessment of physical activities is necessary. The purpose of this study is to assess the feasibility of adults with IDD to track daily steps and wear an accelerometer. Methods: Overweight/obese adults with mild to moderate IDD followed a diet and physical activity program for 18 months. All participants were asked to wear a pedometer and track steps daily by using a pedometer and to provide accelerometer data for 7 days at baseline, 6, 12 and 18 months. Adherence to the pedometer protocol and plausibility of the number of recorded steps were assessed, and these measures along with average wear time of the accelerometer were recorded. Results: Data were collected from 149 participants (36.5 ± 12.2 years of age, 57% female). Participants recorded a step value on 81.5% of days across the 18‐month study, with 40.9% of written days classified as plausible. When wearing the accelerometer, 26.8% of participants met the recommended 4‐day/10‐h wear time criterion at baseline, and 22.6, 24.8 and 18.8% met the criterion at 6, 12 and 18 months, respectively. Conclusions: Adults with IDD will adhere reasonably well to wearing a pedometer long term, but may be unable to record the step data accurately. Furthermore, adults with IDD have poor compliance with accelerometer protocols, and future studies should determine if a shorter wear time protocol would produce valid data in this population
RESEARCH ON IMPROVED EPOXY RESINS( Book )

1 edition published in 1965 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The primary purpose of this program is to define the correlations of novel polyepoxide molecular configurations with the physical properties of cured resins and composites as the initial step in providing significant improvements in filament reinforced plastics for deep submergence structures. The synthesis and evaluation of new epoxy resin configurations, especially those derived from cyclopentenyl phenols, were continued. One new type of epoxy resins, typified by EXRN-1972, showed potential high performance in modulus, strength, and resistance to crack propagation. The poly-functional resins, such as EXRN-2280 and EXRN-1798, showed potential high performance at elevated temperatures. Homopolymers of bis- (2,3-epoxycyclopentyl) ether, developed elsewhere but screened for potential in deep submergence applications under the NRL Program, exhibited generally good performance in salt water and as high as 14,500 psi interlaminar shear strength. The shear strength of these 'million-modulus' homopolymers was comparable to that of EP-2114, another 'million-modulus' epoxy resin. Cast resin properties from a series of epoxy resins hardened with several aromatic diamines are reported, but these data are sufficient to advance only speculative conclusions. (Author)
