A linguistic history of the forgotten islands : a reconstruction of the proto-language of the Southern Ryūkyūs by John R Bentley( )

11 editions published between 2007 and 2008 in English and held by 1,089 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Sakishima comprises a group of islands situated between Okinawa and Taiwan, forming a culturally important bridge between Japan and Taiwan. Studies of the languages of the Ryukyuan islands are valuable for an accurate understanding of the linguistic history of Japan as a whole
The authenticity of Sendai kuji hongi : a new examination of texts, with a translation and commentary by John R Bentley( Book )

8 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 104 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This reexamination of Sendai kuji hongi (Kujiki) convincingly leads the reader to new conclusions on its place within the history and historiography of early Japan. While the Sendai kuji hongi is generally considered as simply derivative, drawing on Kojiki, Nihon shoki, and Kogo shui, John Bentley's careful textual analysis demonstrates that the work has actually drawn from drafts of Kojiki and Nihon shoki, but not Kogo shui, which has quoted from Kujiki. Thus the work can not be seen as a product of the early Heian era, but must date from the early Nara era. It therewith offers a new look not only into Japanese early Japanese historiography, but also provides a window to a variant view of the Japanese imperial lineage. The first three chapters consist of an analysis of the text from a textual analytical and linguistic viewpoint. Sections only found in Kujiki are then examined and analyzed. With full translation of the ten books of Kujiki, and amply annotated text."--Publisher's website

Sensitization of high density silver azide to stab initiation by Robert J Spear( Book )

2 editions published in 1983 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The preparation of high density silver azide, bulk density 2.15 g/cc, in a free flowing crystalline form is described. Sensitivity data are given and the ability of both energetic and grit sensitizers to sensitize the material to stab initiation has been assessed. Some of the grit mixes are very susceptible to explosion during pressing. Experimental compositions based on L mix and N.O.L. 130, with LDNR or lead azide/styphnate replaced by silver azide and tetrazene by KHADNBF, were studied and show the potential of developing stab and percussion mixes based on silver azide
A miniature ionization probe technique using a multilayer circuit board for the study of explosive phenomena in primary and secondary explosives by Robert J Spear( Book )

2 editions published in 1981 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A miniature ionization probe technique using a multilayer circuit board has been developed. Full experimental details including construction of the boards, explosive charge preparation and instrumentation are reported. Each copper layer in the circuit board functions as an ionization probe and optimum conditions were achieved with a probe density of 15 per cm, ie, probe separation about 0.75 mm. Explosive samples were studied in a geometry similar to that of practical fuze detonators; the pressed explosive columns were 5-8 mm long and masses ranged from 0.58 g to only 0.08 g. Accurate, reproducible detonation velocity measurements have been obtained for the primary explosives service lead azide, at a wide range of densities, lead azide, RD1343, silver azide and mercuric 5-nitro-tetrazole and the secondary explosive tetryl. Some potential improvements and future uses of the technique are discussed. (Author)

3 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Development of a gasless pyrotechnic cap by John R Bentley( Book )

2 editions published in 1980 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A new gasless pyrotechnic percussion cap composition was developed and tested in M42 cup assemblies. The sensitivity was comparable to M42 caps and preliminary tests indicated that the stability of the composition was satisfactory. The composition produced minimum gaseous by-products and gave an adequate output to ignite pyrotechnic delay units reliably. The new composition overcomes the problem of cap ejection and venting due to the high pressures produced by traditional percussion cap compositions in hermetically sealed systems. (Author)

Exothermic and Resistance Starting Techniques for Use in the Electroslag-Refining Process( Book )

1 edition published in 1978 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Cold-starting techniques for use with the experimental electroslag-refining furnace at MRL have been examined. Two cold-starting devices based on exothermic reactions and resistance-heating, respectively, have both been developed to the stage where reliable starting can be achieved. A common feature of these devices is that they are readily attached to the end of the consumable electrode. Although the exothermic device produced faster starts, some contamination of the ingot resulted from its use. The exothermic device also resulted in the formation of worm-hole porosity in the first 25 mm of ingot length. Ingots produced with the resistance device were free from both these forms of contamination and, therefore, the use of this device is preferred for the experimental work at MRL. (Author)

Insensitive Conducting Composition (CC) Primers( Book )

1 edition published in 1986 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

RADHAZ is a serious problem in munitions using CC primers. An asssessment of risk analysis is made. Development of two series of CC primers suitable for 20 mm cannon and 105 mm tank ammunition but which have markedly higher energy and power thresholds than current service primers is described
