The Konstantinos Karamanlis Institute for Democracy yearbook 2011 : the global economic crisis and the case of Greece by Konstantina Botsiou( )

18 editions published between 2011 and 2013 in English and held by 431 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In all probability 2011 is going to be one of the most critical years in recent decades. The problems created by the global economic crisis continue to affect the lives of ordinary people and could become a source of social instability. At the same time, developments at international level are creating a sense of uncertainty since long-established balances are facing profound challenges. With contributions by distinguished scholars and policymakers from Greece and abroad, the Konstantinos Karamanlis Institute for Democracy Yearbook 2011 addresses various issues of public debate both in Europe and internationally. Special attention is given to the global economic crisis and, more specifically, to its impact on Greece, which has recently found itself at the epicenter of international attention. Certain of the essays highlight the importance of leadership as an instrument for political reform, while a special section provides an update on the major global issue of climate change
The Constantinos Karamanlis Institute for Democracy Yearbook 2010 by Constantine Arvanitopoulos( )

13 editions published between 2010 and 2013 in English and held by 370 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

2010 marks a turning point for international politics. The impact of the global crisis is reflected in the readiness of both national governments and international organisations to rebuild relations between state and market within a safer regulatory framework. New models of development gained ground during the crisis: investments in new energy technologies, medical research, education, security and employment. In Europe, novel ideas interact with major institutional changes put into effect by the Lisbon Treaty. A wide range of policies, from the field of European security to the problems of migration and from EU enlargement to Euro-American cooperation, are affected by the changes on all these levels. The Constantinos Karamanlis Institute for Democracy Yearbook 2010 addresses vital aspects of the European and international agenda, bringing together prominent scholars and policymakers from a variety of national backgrounds. This special thematic issue on recent history illustrates the long-term interplay between Greek politics, on the one hand, and Europeanisation, liberalism and historical memory, on the other hand
The Constantinos Karamanlis Institute for Democracy Yearbook 2009 by Constantine Arvanitopoulos( )

9 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 367 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The year 2009 finds Europe at a crossroads. The European Union faces the challenges posed by the Lisbon Treaty under the impact of a major international financial and economic crisis. Transatlantic relations are stimulated by the change of administration in Washington. On both sides of the Atlantic political priorities focus on the build-up of social protection against economic recession, the adoption of innovative energy and environmental policies, the promotion of security and the prevention of humanitarian disasters in unstable areas, notably the Middle East and Africa. This book addresses this complex international environment through essays that were presented in publications and public events of the Constantinos Karamanlis Institute for Democracy. It brings together prominent scholars and policy makers from various national backgrounds. Their contributions highlight policies and ideas that shape issues of international interest, reflecting also the public debate in Greece within the European context
The Balkans in the Cold War( )

11 editions published between 2016 and 2017 in English and German and held by 207 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Positioned on the fault line between two competing Cold War ideological and military alliances, and entangled in ethnic, cultural and religious diversity, the Balkan region offers a particularly interesting case for the study of the global Cold War system. This book explores the origins, unfolding and impact of the Cold War on the Balkans on the one hand, and the importance of regional realities and pressures on the other. Fifteen contributors from history, international relations, and political science address a series of complex issues rarely covered in one volume, namely the Balkans and the creation of the Cold War order; Military alliances and the Balkans; uneasy relations with the Superpowers; Balkan dilemmas in the 1970s and 1980s and the 'significant other' - the EEC; and identity, culture and ideology. The book's particular contribution to the scholarship of the Cold War is that it draws on extensive multi-archival research of both regional and American, ex-Soviet and Western European archives.--
