12 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 272 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book is an important account of the current state of using writing as a tool for learning. It presents psychological and educational foundations of writing across the curriculum movement and describes writing-to-learn practices implemented at different levels of education, ranging from elementary school to higher education. It also puts the question into the broader context of schooling and the society, including writing and modern technology. Writing as a Learning Tool is useful for educators, curriculum developers, psychologists, cognitive scientists, writing researchers, and teachers at all levels and all disciplines. It provides concrete applications and ideas about how to enhance student learning by the means of writing. It pictures writing being more than a mere skill. Writing is an act for making meaning and advancing thinking. This book provides inspiration and insight for everybody who wants to go beyond their current understanding of writing."--Jacket

Sense of Competence and Optimism as Resources to Promote Academic Engagement( )

1 edition published in 2015 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Abstract: This study investigated what kinds of studying profiles could be identified in terms of achievement strategies (optimism, task avoidance) and experienced challenge-competence balance, and whether such profiles are related to students' academic engagement or disengagement. The participants (n=785) were Finnish undergraduate students from University of Helsinki (teacher education, chemistry, theology, law) and Aalto university (engineering). Three profiles were identified by K-means cluster analysis: pessimistic, bored and optimistic . Pessimistic expressed the highest task avoidance and lowest optimism and competence. Optimistic reported the lowest task avoidance and highest optimism and competence. Bored experienced the lowest challenge as compared to both pessimistic and optimistic . ANOVAs revealed that optimistic expressed the highest engagement, whereas pessimistic were the most disengaged. Bored students' problem appeared to be lack of interest rather than any other study problems
Ihmisen mieli by Riitta Hari( Book )

1 edition published in 2018 in Finnish and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

[Elib]

Engaging and disengaging doctoral experiences in the behavioural sciences( )

1 edition published in 2014 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Abstract : Purpose: – The aim of this paper is to explore doctoral students' engaging and disengaging experiences among a group of students whose doctoral processes had been prolonged for more than seven years. Design/methodology/approach: – The participants were 16 doctoral students in the behavioural sciences. The data were collected with interviews employing a visualisation of their doctoral journeys, and were content analysed qualitatively. Findings: – The results suggested that the students described their engagement in doctoral work in terms of dedication, vigour and occasionally absorption. In turn, disengagement was described in terms of insufficiency, cynicism and sometimes exhaustion. Interestingly, the source of engagement was typically a sense of belonging in the scholarly community, whereas the students often reported a lack of autonomy and a lack of belonging as sources for disengagement. Research limitations/implications: – Further longitudinal studies are needed to explore the development of engagement in doctoral work among students from different contexts. Practical implications: – In terms of developing more engaging learning environments, the findings imply that by enhancing students' sense of belonging to their scholarly community and their experiences of autonomy within it their engagement in doctoral work, and further, development as researchers can be fostered. Originality/value: – This study extends the understanding of what may engage or disengage students from their doctoral studies and the essential relationship between the sense of autonomy and that of belonging in doctoral student engagement, in particular in the context of prolonged doctoral studies in the behavioural sciences
Is Student Motivation Related to Socio-digital Participation? A Person-oriented Approach( )

1 edition published in 2015 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Abstract: There is a hypothesized gap between the technology-mediated practices of adolescents and school, hindering student motivation and well-being. This study examined how students' school motivation is associated with ICT-use. Previous research has shown that achievement goal orientations are related to students' academic and emotional functioning. Simultaneously, adolescents engage in various socio-digital activities on a daily basis. Our aim is to integrate these two approaches to examine whether students with different motivational profiles display different patterns of socio-digital participation. The participants were Finnish high school students ( N =1342) who filled in a self-report questionnaire assessing school motivation and ICT-use both in and out of school. We examined the structural validity of the measurement model by confirmatory factor analyses, classified the students by latent profile analyses and examined group and gender differences by ANOVAs. Four groups were identified: indifferent, success-oriented, mastery-oriented, and avoidance-oriented. The groups differed in their generalized motivational beliefs and there were meaningful differences in terms of their orientations to socio-digital participation: e.g. indifferent students were more likely to engage in hanging-out and gaming, avoidance-oriented students were the least engaged in academic activities. Also, there were some interesting group × gender interaction effects. We found that students' indifference towards school is associated with ICT-engagement outside of school (gaming and hanging-out). We conclude that there appears to be evidence of discontinuities between today's schools and their students, raising a question of whether the indifference is the cause or the outcome. Furthermore, the findings raise new insights on achievement goal and gender interaction effects
