Women's poetry and religion in Victorian England : Jewish identity and Christian culture by Cynthia Scheinberg( Book )

14 editions published between 2002 and 2009 in English and held by 413 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Victorian women poets lived in a time when religion was a vital aspect of their identities. Cynthia Scheinberg examines Anglo-Jewish (Grace Aguilar and Amy Levy) and Christian (Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Christina Rossetti) women poets, and argues that there are important connections between the discourses of nineteenth-century poetry, gender and religious identity. Further, Scheinberg argues that women poets in Victorian England of both Jewish and non-Jewish backgrounds had deep interests in the Jewish scriptures, and that they often used images and texts from Judaism in their poetry. She suggests that Jewish and Christian women used poetry as a site for creative and original theological interpretation, and that they entered into dialogue through their poetry about their own and each other's religious and artistic identities. Broadly interdisciplinary, the book's methodology calls on studies in poetics, religious studies, feminist literary criticism, and little-read Anglo-Jewish primary sources."--Jacket

In English 171, students from Mills College and East Bay high schools come together to discuss writing and education. All high school students participate in Mills College Upward Bound program, designed to help students who are the first generation in their family to go to college, and succeed in that goal. Our shared classroom is thus a unique place where students at different points in their education, from all kinds of different backgrounds, ages, and experiences come together to explore writing, the educational systems in which they have participated, and how writing might create social change in the world.--From the preface by Cynthia Scheinberg
