Teach like your hair's on fire : the methods and madness inside room 56 by Rafe Esquith( Book )

10 editions published between 2007 and 2012 in 4 languages and held by 2,246 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In a Los Angeles neighborhood plagued by guns, gangs, and drugs, there is a classroom known as Room 56. The fifth graders inside are first-generation immigrants who live in poverty and speak English as a second language. They also play Vivaldi, perform Shakespeare, score in the top 1% on standardized tests, and go on to attend Ivy League universities. Rafe Esquith is the teacher responsible for these accomplishments. Here, he reveals his techniques. The classroom's mottoes are "Be nice, work hard," and "There are no shortcuts." His students voluntarily come to school at 6:30 in the morning and work until 5:00 in the afternoon. They pair Hamlet with rock and roll, learn to handle money responsibly, tackle algebra, and travel the country to study history. This is an inspiring road map for parents, teachers, and anyone who cares about the future success of our nation's children.--From publisher description

8 editions published between 2013 and 2014 in English and held by 959 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In Real Talk for Real Teachers, Esquith tackles the three stages of life for the career teacher, and outlines both practical advice and inspiration for managing your classrooms, challenging your students, and keeping your own passions alive. Esquith's candor about the inevitable frustration and cynicism that strike at the heart of every teacher at some point offers both comfort and connection to those who experience doubt and struggle with difficult students, endless bureaucracy, and other standard pitfalls. Esquith's years of teaching have given him gems of wisdom about how to work smarter, not harder, and how to draw on those years of experience to flourish and continue growing. Esquith is the inner-city Los Angeles elementary school teacher featured in the award-winning documentary The Hobart Shakespeareans

The Latino-and Asian-American children crowding Los Angeles' sprawling Hobart Boulevard Elementary face daunting odds: low-income households, an under-funded, overcrowded school, and a neighborhood known for crime, not opportunity. Living his motto "Be nice, work hard, there are no shortcuts," Esquith leads his fifth-graders through a rigorous core curriculum of English, mathematics, geography, and literature, culminating in an end-of-the year performance of a full-length, unabridged Shakespearean play, and proving that with enough WIll power, anyone can succeed
