We study the reconstructive phase transformations in crystalline solids (i.e. transformations in which the parent and product lattices have arithmetic symmetry groups admitting no finite supergroup), the best known example of which is the bcc-to-fcc transformation in iron. We first describe the maximal Ericksen-Pitteri neighborhoods in the space of lattice metrics, thereby obtaining a quantitative characterization for weak transformations. Then, focussing for simplicity on a two-dimensional setting, we construct a class of strain-energy functions which admit large strains in their domain and are invariant under the full symmetry group of the lattice; in particular, we give an explicit energy suitable for the square-to-hexagonal reconstructive transformation in planar lattices. We present a numerical scheme based on atomic-scale finite elements and use it to analyze the effects of transformation cycling on a planar crystal, by means of our constitutive function. This example illustrates the main phenomena related to reconstructive phase changes: in particular, the formation of dislocations, vacancies and interstitials in the lattice

Continuum Models for Phase Transitions and Twinning in Crystals presents the fundamentals of a remarkably successful approach to crystal thermomechanics. Developed over the last two decades, it is based on the mathematical theory of nonlinear thermoelasticity, in which a new viewpoint on material symmetry, motivated by molecular theories, plays a central role. This is the first organized presentation of a nonlinear elastic approach to twinning and displacive phase transition in crystalline solids. The authors develop geometry, kinematics, and energy invariance in crystals in strong connection and with the purpose of investigating the actual mechanical aspects of the phenomena, particularly in an elastostatics framework based on the minimization of a thermodynamic potential. Interesting for both mechanics and mathematical analysis, the new theory offers the possibility of investigating the formation of microstructures in materials undergoing martensitic phase transitions, such as shape-memory alloys. Les Transformation Martensitiques (TM) sont des transitions du premier ordre entre des phases cristallines qui caractérisent une classe intéressante de matériaux intelligents, les Alliages à Mémoire de Forme (AMF). Ces alliages métalliques furent découverts dans les années 1930 environ. Ils sont surtout intéressants car ils combinent deux effets particuliers : l'effet de mémoire de forme et la pseudo-élasticité. L'effet mémoire de forme consiste à mémoriser une configuration particulière et la retrouver après des cycles thermiques ou mécaniques. La Pseudo-Elasticité consiste à rejoindre des niveaux de déformation très grands qui sont, en général, plus typiques du caoutchouc que des métaux. Dans cette thèse, nous avons traité la caractérisation des transformations martensitiques en analysant des points de vue différents. La compréhension du fonctionnement des AMFs est fondamentale pour plusieurs types d'applications industrielles. Elle constitue encore un domaine de recherche très ouvert. (...)
