William Christenberry : Fundacion Mapfre, Madrid, September-November 2013, Centro Jose Guerrero, Granada, December 2013-March 2014 by William Christenberry( Book )

5 editions published in 2013 in English and Spanish and held by 188 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Christenberry is firmly established as a contemporary American master photographer, but no comprehensive overview of his diverse talents is currently in print. This 260-page volume - the largest Christenberry overview yet published - corrects this lacuna, offering a thematic survey of his half-century-long career. It is composed of 13 sections, each devoted to a particular series or theme: the wooden sculptures of Southern houses, cafes and shops; the early, black-and-white, Walker Evans-influenced photographs of Southern interiors, taken in Alabama and Mississippi in the early 60s; documentations of Ku Klux Klan meeting houses and rallies, from the mid-1960s; color photographs of tenant houses in Alabama, from 1961 to 1978; signs in landscapes, ranging from handwritten gas station signs to Klan and corporate signs; graves (which, through Christenberry's lens, emerge as a kind of folk art), etc. 0Exhibition: Fundación Mapfre, Madrid, Spain (17.9.-24.11.2013). 0

Louis Faurer by Louis Faurer( Book )

4 editions published in 2016 in English and German and held by 85 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book is the first in fifteen years to present the largely overlooked work of Louis Faurer, who depicted the melancholy streets of New York in the 1940s and '50s, and whom Walter Hopps has described as a 'master of his medium.' Faurer initially worked for fashion magazines such as Harper's Bazaar in New York, but soon focused his eye on the enchanting city itself: 'Everywhere a new discovery awaited me.' Here Faurer made poetic, darkly romantic images of the characters of the street, often the poor and lonely amidst the bustle of Times Square during what he called its 'hypnotic dusk light.' Inspired by Walker Evans, Faurer developed a personal, highly empathetic vision, comparable to that of Robert Frank, with whom he shared a loft and darkroom in his early New York days. Faurer solidified his ironic, brooding aesthetic in the '50s, often employing graphic contrasts, reflections and distortions which show the influence of film noir and deepen his exploration of the psychology of the individual: 'My eyes search for people who are grateful for life, people who forgive and whose doubts have been removed, who understand the truth, whose enduring spirit is bathed by such piercing light as to provide their present and future with hope' "--
New York in photobooks( Book )

3 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 64 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"New York in Photobooks gathers and studies a selection of images of the capital of the twentieth century, the most photogenic and most photographed city in history. In these images from the books selected (only a fraction of those in existence), the city of skyscrapers is captured from construction thereof in the 1930s to the destruction of the World Trade Center in 2001, alongside the urban life of the New Yorkers themselves, recorded in a model style of street photography. Many of the books are the work of European and Japanese photographers, who discovered multiple perspectives (human, cultural, social, economic ...) from which to view the city that shaped the twentieth century. [New York in Photobooks] is the catalogue of a traveling exhibition curated by Horacio Fernández, who is also the editor of the book: a collaborative effort in which, in addition to the many images, there are texts by numerous pho-tography scholars"--Publisher's website
Laocoonte devorado : arte y violencia politica( Book )

10 editions published in 2004 in Spanish and English and held by 61 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

5 editions published in 2016 in Spanish and held by 31 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

5 editions published in 2008 in Spanish and held by 29 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Ir y venir de Valcárcel Medina by Isidoro Valcárcel Medina( Book )

4 editions published in 2002 in Spanish and held by 20 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Duane Michals by Duane Michals( Book )

2 editions published in 2017 in Spanish and held by 17 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

An artist in balance between photography and poetry, Duane Michals (McKeesport, Pennsylvania, 1932) is one of the most prestigious names of North American avant-garde. In the sixties, he created a new approach to photography, which did not intend to document facts or "truth", but to deal with metaphysical aspects of life. Through very personal work of extraordinary originality, Duane Michals has blurred the line between photography and other disciplines, such as poetry or painting. He has become one of the artists who has renewed photographic language with great intensity over the past sixty years. In an age marked by photojournalism, he rejected the limitations of this trend, and became closer to cinematic storytelling, by using carefully formed photographic sequences. Likewise, he crossed the limits of the means, by incorporating handwritten texts on his developed copies which add a deeper dimension to his photographs. With uncomplicated technique and lighting, and meticulous set design, his work approaches the major questions of the human being, often through play and irony. He also uses these elements to construct his portraits, in which he tries to reflect not only the physical aspect of the models, but more their identity and the elements that characterize them best. Whatever the means and the subject addressed, the personality, concerns and the sense of humor of Duane Michals overflow in all his works.--Fundación MAPFRE website
