"The first year under saddle sets the building blocks for the future of a riding horse: with a solid basic training he can do what is required of him willingly while remaining in the best of health. Twenty years after the publication of Reiner Klimke's classic work comes a new edition, fully revised and updated by Reiner and his daughter, Ingrid. Based on sound, practical and theoretical advice, this instructional handbook gives advice on establishing a specific training plan for recreational riders as well as competition riders to enable them to train their young horses successfully. Every aspect of the education of a young horse is covered, including: basic education; lungeing; training under saddle; from suppleness to the development of impulsion; cavalletti work; jumping training; hacking; and preparing for the first competition." -- from publisher's website

Masters of equitation on trot( Book )

2 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 26 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book explores the enormous value of the trot in schooling and suppling the horse, and explains how the natural trot of a recently backed horse is developed into the working gait, which will later form the basis for collection and extension. Trot is the gait at which much of a horse's general schooling is carried out. It is most suited to this purpose since it is more impulsive than walk and less complex than canter. As a consequence of its diagonal nature, all four legs perform an equal amount of work, and the back muscles flex and extend alternately on each side of the spine, producing an overall suppling effect. If the trot is to fulfil its role as the training gait, it must be of good quality, and should improve and develop as training progresses. Of course, this improvement and development may go far beyond the bounds of the working trot, to spectacular extensions and the ultimate levels of collection, as seen in piaffe and passage, however, in this treatise the emphasis is fundamentally upon the development of the working trot and its role as the foundation of training. Masters of Equitation on Trot is essential reading for all riders who wish to lay the correct foundations for their horses' schooling, and will fascinate all readers interested in equestrian history

The Allen illustrated encyclopaedia of dressage by Martin Diggle( Book )

3 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 24 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Dressage has enjoyed a long and colourful history and is today more popular than ever. The Allen Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Dressage offers general guidance on the development and practice of dressage, both in its pure sense as 'training' and in its newer role as a competitive sport. Accordingly, it contains biographical entries of eminent trainers, authors and competitors, past and present, from many countries. It also contains explanations of dressage terms and references to the rules of competition, with notes that the latter may vary in points of detail depending upon the organizing body concerned and the precise nature of the test. The entries are illustrated throughout with contemporary photographs of eminent individuals, older photographs and pictures of personalities from former eras and a range of drawings and engravings taken from books written by those mentioned within." "This first international encyclopaedia of the dressage world will be of great value to those seeking information on specific points of dressage, and is fascinating reading for those interested in the historical development of the discipline and the progress and achievements of many of its key figures."--BOOK JACKET
