"Growing transportation costs and tight delivery schedules mean that good locational decisions are more crucial than ever in the success or failure of industrial and public projects. The development of realistic location models is an essential phase in every locational decision process. Especially when dealing with geometric representations of continuous (planar) location model problems, the geographical reality must be incorporated." "This text develops the mathematical implications of barriers to the geometric and analytical characteristics of continuous location problems. Besides their relevance in the application of location theoretic results, location problems with barriers are also very interesting from a mathematical point of view. The nonconvexity of distance measures in the presence of barriers leads to nonconvex optimization problems. Most of the classical methods in continuous location theory rely heavily on the convexity of the objective function and will thus fail in this context. On the other hand, general methods in global optimization capable of treating nonconvex problems ignore the geometric characteristics of the location problems considered. Theoretic as well as algorithmic approaches are utilized to overcome the described difficulties for the solution of location problems with barriers. This thesis presents a new approach for solving the nonconvex optimization problem of locating a semiobnoxious facility. By applying the duality theory by Toland and Singer for d.c. optimization problems the existence of optimal solutions is studied. Duality assertions, geometrical properties and discretization results are stated and proven. Moreover, this thesis considers the more general case of a constrained location problem. It is shown that most of the results obtained for the unconstrained location problem can be generalized to the constrained case. The obtained results are applied in order to formulate algorithms, which determine exact solutions by leading back the nonconvex optimization problem to a finite number of convex problems. The developed algorithms are implemented as Matlab functions. Although, a scalar optimization problem is considered, this thesis shows interesting relations to the fields of linear vector optimization and geometric duality theory

Heutzutage spielt die mathematische Optimierung in vielen Anwendungen eine wesentliche Rolle. Häufig ergibt sich der Wunsch, nicht nur ein einziges Ziel sondern mehrere Ziele gleichzeitig zu optimieren. So sollten beispielsweise bei der Fertigung eines Produktes nicht nur die Kosten minimiert werden, sondern gleichzeitig sollte auch ein qualitativ hochwertiges Produkt entstehen. Die Entwicklung von theoretischen und algorithmischen Grundlagen für die mathematische Beschreibung und Lösung solcher Probleme bietet die Mehrzieloptimierung. In der vorliegenden Arbeit werden verschiedene Mehrzieloptimierungsprobleme aus dem ingenieurwissenschaftlichen Bereich untersucht. Motiviert durch das Beispiel der Arbeitspunktsteuerung eines Linearmotors liegt der Fokus dieser Arbeit auf der Studie parameterabhängiger Mehrzieloptimierungsprobleme. Es wird zum einen ein neuer Ansatz vorgestellt, der mittels Verwendung von Algorithmen zur numerischen Pfadverfolgung die Lösung zeitabhängiger Mehrzieloptimierungsprobleme erlaubt. The first approach is based on the classical calculus of variations while the second one makes use of numerical path following methods. Finally, geometrical properties of the solution set of nonconvex, parametric multiobjective optimization problems are studied and connections to bifurcation theory are pointed out
