The last Southern gentleman : a critical biography of Shelby Foote by C. Stuart Chapman( )

Abstract: This dissertation is a literary and cultural biography of Shelby Foote, the Southern novelist and Civil War historian. Foote has enjoyed his greatest prominence during the last decade, both as a friend of his fellow Southern writer Walker Percy and through his highly visible role in Ken and Ric Burns' popular 1990 Public Broadcasting Service series, The Civil War . Because of this new celebrity and because of the fact that his novels and Civil War trilogy have received very little critical attention, Foote deserves a first full-length biography. In The Last Southern Gentleman, I consider Foote's fiction and history writing (particularly The Civil War: A Narrative) in themselves, as well as in the context of Foote's struggle to understand the radical social and cultural changes brought on by the South's modernization and fuller integration into national life. In particular, I focus on how Foote's work alternately reflects these changes and retreats into nostalgia for some earlier period, particularly the Civil War. Taken as a whole, his work serves as a refuge for his deeply ambivalent feelings about the changes affecting the South. Ultimately, Foote's failures are as splendid and interesting as his successes in illustrating the dilemmas of a white moderate Southerner
