L'autobiographie irlandaise : voix communes, voix singulières( )

in French and held by 15 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

1 edition published in 2015 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Pragmatic translation is thought as the area of specialized translators working for clients outside of the publishing industry, which is deemed to contract literary translators. This is true to some extend. However a large sector of the publishing industry is not concerned with literature but with pragmatic books dealing with all sorts of topics. Many pragmatic translators working for the publishing industry are in fact specialized in translating pragmatic books, not texts. They have to understand the way pragmatic books, made of visual and linguistic messages, convey information to their readers to translate them. This aspect of translation is little known and, outside the study of translation for advertising, research investigating the interaction of texts and iconography is scarce. There is even less on translator training. This thesis endeavours to contribute the observations of a professional translator turned translator trainer. It begins by describing the layout of pragmatic books and showing how the translator must take in the text and the iconography to make sense of the message. The double page is a visual unit splitting the information between text and images. As a result, a translation unit is a mix of texts and images. It follows that translators have to approach the translation of books as a multisemiotic activity. Therefore, when translating pragmatic books, translators have to consider them as signifying space in which textual units are no longer the only source of information. The core of the specialisation of pragmatic translators working in the publishing industry is a profound understanding of how books communicate meaning. Publishers expect both authors and translators to be able to write following style specifications for a given book series. Tapuscrits are proofread and sometimes partially rewritten to be put in agreement with the social communicative norms. At the end of the process leading to the publication of a book, the published text is a collective product and no longer the text originally provided by its "author". To translate in this context, trainees must learn how to work in a team, albeit working from home. Translation training, at this point, aims at turning students into independent professional able to rewrite and adapt texts, taking into account the visual around, to accommodate readers' expectations as defined by publishers. As they strive to improve their translation techniques, soon to be translators also need to learn to become cultural mediator and to criticize the books they are translating so as to improve them if need be. Invisible to readers, their contribution to the making of a book, appears in the writing of the translation and in comments on the book itself; and it is very visible to publishers they work for
En quête des jardins maternels : voix polyphoniques de Katherine Anne Porter, Ellen Glasgow et Eudora Welty by Elisabeth Lamothe( Book )

1 edition published in 2003 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

THIS STUDY RESTS ON THE ANALYSIS OF WOMEN'S TEXTS TO DEMONSTRATE THE METAMORPHOSES OF THE IDEA OF CREATIVITY IN TWENTIETH-CENTURY SOUTHERN LITERATURE. WE ARGUE THAT WOMEN AUTHORS' ATTEMPT TO UNDERMINE PREVIOUS THEMES AND PLOTS ALLOWED FOR THE EMERGENCE OF THE FIGURE OF THE FEMALE ARTIST, TRYING TO BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN GENDER IDENTITY AND ARTISTIC IDENTITY. THIS STUDY COMPRISES THE WORKS OF THREE AUTHORS: ELLEN GLASGOW, KATHERINE ANNE PORTER AND EUDORA WELTY, WHO PUBLISHED THROUGHOUT THE TWENTIETH CENTURY AND WHOSE TREATMENT OF THE NOTION OF WOMEN'S CREATIVITY ESTABLISHES A SENSE OF FERTILE CONTINUITY. THE FIRST PART OF THIS WORK DEALS WITH THE LITERARY TRADITION GLASGOW WAS HEIR TO AND SHOWS HOW FOUR OF HER MAIN NOVELS SUBVERT TRADITIONAL REPRESENTATIONS OF SOUTHERN FEMININITY AND CELEBRATE FEMALE CREATIVITY. THE SECOND PART OF THIS STUDY LOOKS AT GLASGOW'S ESSAYS, AS WELL AS PORTER'S CORRESPONDENCE, MANUSCRIPTS AND SHORT STORIES TO ESTABLISH THE DOUBLE NATURE OF THE CREATIVE PROCESS WOMEN WRITERS ARE INVOLVED IN: IT INCLUDES LAYING THE FOUNDATIONS OF THEIR ARTISTIC IDENTITY AND INVESTING METAPHORS DERIVED FROM THEIR GENDER IDENTITY WITH ARTISTIC MEANING. WELTY'S FICTION RESORTS TO SIMILAR METAPHORS, INCLUDING THAT OF THE PATCHWORK QUILT, TO ILLUSTRATE THE CREATIVE PROCESS. THE LAST PART OF THIS THESIS ANALYSES THE ACT OF READING AS CREATIVE PROCESS. WE SHOW THAT READING CAN REINFORCE FEMALE CHARACTERS' COMPLIANCE WITH THE NORMS OF GENDER IDENTITY BUT ALSO FUNCTION AS A LIBERATING AND SELF-CREATING EXPERIENCE FOR OTHERS

Pouvoirs civils et religieux dans la fiction d'Earl Lovelace (1935-...) : entre collusion et collision by Noémie Le Vourch( )

1 edition published in 2014 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

In his novels and short stories, Earl Lovelace describes the island of Trinidad as caught in the ebb and flow of two antagonistic systems of thought, both shattered in the event of a sudden decolonisation. Religion and politics, the corner stones of social architecture, have no choice but to undergo changes in view of adaptation. Facing a background of secularisation and growing political consciousness, religion is compelled to lay aside its selfsufficiency to avoid being overthrown by the body politics. As a consequence, a struggle, in which the survival of individuals is at stake, ensues. This thesis offers to explore the rivalries between the religious and political bodies as well as the ability of Lovelace's fictional Caribbean to overcome this dichotomy. In other words, in Lovelace's work does polity annihilate religion or act in accordance with it to achieve a move from unworthy politics to a faith aiming at liberation?

Enseignement de l'anglais en Côte d'Ivoire les manuels scolaires de 1970 à nos jours by Issiaka Doumbia( Book )

This doctoral dissertation presents an analysis of textbooks used in the English language classroom in Côte d'Ivoire from 1970 to 2003. It begins by examining the institutional, educational and socio-cultural backdrop to the processes involved in the learning of English. We analyze the apparent lack of efficiency of English language teaching methods in secondary schools, before moving on to examine the question of whether, and to what extent, contributions from the world of modern linguistics and research in the field of cognitive psychology have been integrated into the content of the textbooks. To date, despite some improvements, the methods used for teaching English are still far from satisfying the objectives laid down in government recommendations. Our analysis also includes a critical appraisal of the methodological choices adopted by textbook authors in such specific fields as grammar, lexical content and phonology and this through collated quantitative data. This in turn will shed new light on the results of a survey carried out in Ivorian secondary schools in 2004, pertaining to the opinions and impressions voiced by teachers and learners relative to the textbooks at their disposal. Our final step is to explore a number of linguistic and didactic approaches to language learning, in which the accent will be laid on the development of meta-linguistic and meta-cognitive tools. This will culminate in the elaboration of a conceptual model for English language teaching which is learner-centred, with the teacher acting as a guide and fostering the development of learning strategies rooted in a learner-based reflection on the nature of the language being studied
