The Cambridge illustrated history of the Islamic world(
Book
)
1 edition published in 1996 in English and held by 1,570 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
For most of the period from the eighth to the eighteenth centuries, the Muslim world was dominant in terms both of geographical spread and creativity. Today Muslims account for one fifth of the world's population. Yet there is widespread misunderstanding in the West of what Islam really is. Francis Robinson and his team set out to address this paradox. Dismantling the western perception of Islam as a monolithic culture, they examine the economic basis of Muslim societies. their social ordering, their forms of knowledge and its transmission, and their expression in art, architecture and in the courtly arts and their modern developments. Particular emphasis is placed on the interrelationship between the Islamic world and the West - both share many of the same religious, intellectual and cultural roots. The book demonstrates that it is only recently that western ways came to dominate. Both civilizations owe much to one another

The power of maps by
Denis Wood(
Book
)
1 edition published in 1992 in English and held by 931 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This volume ventures into terrain where even the most sophisticated map fails to lead -- through the mapmaker's bias. Denis Wood shows how maps are not impartial reference objects, but rather instruments of communication, persuasion, and power. Like paintings, they express a point of view. By connecting us to a reality that could not exists in the absence of maps -- a world of property lines and voting rights, taxation districts and enterprise zones -- they embody and project the interests of their creators. Sampling the scope of maps available today, illustrations include Peter Gould's AIDS map, Tom Van Sant's map of the earth, U.S. Geological Survey maps, and a child's drawing of the world. - Back cover

Oral literature in Africa by
Ruth H Finnegan(
Book
)
1 edition published in 1970 in English and held by 705 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book is based only on the more obvious sources and is intended as an introduction, not as a comprehensive account. Only some examples are given from a huge field and experts in particular areas will be able to point to exceptions and omissions. Some of the conclusions too may turn out to be controversial; indeed the author hopes to stimulate further publications and study. On each chapter and each section more research could take the subject much further. But in spite of these limitations, the general purpose of the book will be fulfilled to show that African oral literature is a subject worthy of study and interest, and to provoke further research in this fascinating but too often neglected field
