Japan and United Nations peacekeeping : new pressures, new responses by Hugo Dobson( )

15 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 1,076 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In response to the Second Gulf War of 1991, Japan has embarked upon the task of building its role both within the United Nations, and in United Nations-sponsored peacekeeping operations. Yet, for a traditionally antimilitarist nation, this has been no easy task, and the nature and extent of Japan's involvement in peacekeeping operations have proved to be one of the most controversial issues for the Japanese government and its people in the post-Cold War world." "This book investigates these developments, from the Japanese reaction to the Second Gulf War, and from the first postwar despatch of troops on peacekeeping operations to Cambodia in 1992, to the responses to events in East Timor and the 'war on terrorism'. It further analyses the policy-making opportunities and limitations that have both motivated and restricted the Japanese government's efforts to contribute to global security."--Jacket
Japan and the G7/8 : 1975-2002 by Hugo Dobson( )

15 editions published between 2004 and 2013 in English and held by 1,046 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book analyses Japan's participation in the multilateral forum, the G7/8, since its creation in 1975 through to the Kananaskis Summit in Canada in 2002. Alongside this unique political history of involvement in the summit process, Japan's contributions to the process, its alliance with the US and its position within the East Asian region and international society as a whole are also discussed in depth. Hugo Dobson explores the motivation of the Japanese government and non-governmental actors' aims and objectives and examines how and to what extent they have been achieved." "Presenting a wealth of new research as well as interviews with some of the main Japanese participants in the summit process, this book gives a historically and theoretically informed analysis of Japan's role in the G7 and G8 from 1975 to 2002. It will be of interest to bureaucrats and politicians, as well as scholars of Asian studies and international relations."--BOOK JACKET

This book aims to explore the role that the G8 plays and will play in global governance." "How can one begin to understand the G8 and its position in global governance? Hugo Dobson proceeds to examine this question in terms of the G8's relationship to the more formal and truly institutionalized mechanisms of global governance; like the United Nations (UN), World Bank (WB) and World Trade Organization (WTO). Divided into six chapters, this book provides an innovative and informative contribution to understanding the dynamics of global governance and is especially relevant to promoting this area of investigation in the future." The G20 : engine of Asian regionalism? by Hugo Dobson( )

1 edition published in 2011 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

As a result of the emergence of the G20 as the self-appointed "premier forum for international economic cooperation", Asia's expanded participation in G-summitry has attracted considerable attention. As original G7 member Japan is joined by Australia, China, Indonesia, India and South Korea, this has given rise to another alphanumeric configuration of the Asian 6 (A6). Resulting expectations are that membership in the G20 will impact Asian regionalism as the A6 are forced into coordination and cooperation in response to the G20's agenda and commitments. However, by highlighting the concrete behaviours and motivations of the individual A6 in the G20 summits so far, this paper stands in contrast to the majority of the predominantly normative extant literature. It highlights divergent agendas amongst the A6 as regards the future of the G20 and discusses the high degree of competition over their identities and roles therein. This divergence and competition can be seen across a range of other behaviours including responding to the norm of internationalism in promoting global governance and maintaining the status quo and national interest, in addition to claiming a regional leadership role and managing bilateral relationships with the US. -- G20 ; summitry ; global governance ; Asia ; regionalism
