Britain, Nasser and the balance of power in the Middle East, 1952-1967 : from the Egyptian revolution to the Six-Day War by Robert McNamara( Book )

12 editions published between 2003 and 2004 in English and held by 205 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The aim of this book is to examine British policy towards Turkey. 1959 was an important starting point for Anglo-Turkish relations due to the agreements of Zurich and London about Cyprus. These agreements contributed to the beginning of a new phase in close relations between the two countries. The revolution in Turkey and its aftermath, the transition from the Baghdad Pact to CENTO and the new dimensions of the Cyprus problem became important issues impacting on these bilateral relations. These issues are subject to close examination in this book, in the light of their relevance to modern Anglo-Turkish policy. With research based on newly-available Public Records Office archives, the author provides insight on British reactions to political events in Turkey and shows that in relation to the partition of Cyprus the crucial changes started as early as 1963, with Britain's indirect support
The makers of the modern Middle East by T. G Fraser( Book )

10 editions published between 2011 and 2015 in English and held by 199 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

TG Fraser presents a comprehensive analysis of how the decisions taken at the end of World War I forged a new Middle East. These decisions set in place a pattern which formed the political shape of the region as we know it today, including the popular uprisings witnessed in Egypt and Tunisia in 2011. From the Paris Peace Conference right up to the 2011 clashes in Tahrir Square and Hosni Mubarak's resignation, Fraser gives a relevant and complete overview in this critical time for the Middle East and its people. This book explores the complex interactions of the high politics of the conferences with how Arabs, Jews, and Turks created new realities on the ground, often confounding what the statesmen had decided. With events in the Middle East rarely absent from the world's headlines, this book offers a scholarly and objective analysis of a critical phase in its development

Hashemites : The Dream of Arabia : The Peace Conferences of 1919-23 and Their Aftermath by Robert McNamara( Book )

3 editions published in 2010 in English and Undetermined and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The Arab states at Versailles were widely considered to be pawns of the Great Powers. As the Ottoman Empire disintegrated, the Arab nationalists, led by Emir Faisal, fought for a voice within the mix of tribal, ethnic, and religious loyalties that made up the Middle East. The Arabs soon realized that their plea for self-determination had fallen on deaf ears, and they felt betrayed by both the Balfour Declaration and the Sykes-Picot Agreement. The decisions made led to decades of internal conflict throughout the Middle East, and Robert McNamara demonstrates how the boundaries decided after WWI continue to shape the history of a region that is at the center of world affairs

#1 NATIONAL BESTSELLER. The definitive insider's account of American policy making in Vietnam. "Can anyone remember a public official with the courage to confess error and explain where he and his country went wrong' This is what Robert McNamara does in this brave, honest, honorable, and altogether compelling book."-Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. Written twenty years after the end of the Vietnam War, former Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara's controversial memoir answers the lingering questions that surround this disastrous episode in American history. With unprecedented candor and drawing on a wealth of newly declassified documents, McNamara reveals the fatal misassumptions behind our involvement in Vietnam. Keenly observed and dramatically written, In Retrospect possesses the urgency and poignancy that mark the very best histories-and the unsparing candor that is the trademark of the greatest personal memoirs.
