Exporters moving toward emerging markets: A resource-based approach( )

1 edition published in 2014 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

<Title><x>Abstract</x></title>
<title>Purpose</title>In this study, we aimed to understand whether and how specific capabilities at the firm level can sustain firms during the process of international expansion in emerging markets (EMs).
<title>Design/methodology/approach</title>A quantitative study was carried out, and we analyzed data from a sample of 271 manufacturing firms. A logistic regression was used to check for differences in the endowment of resources and capabilities of firms solely focusing on advanced markets (AMs) or extending their international scope to EMs as well.
<title>Findings</title>Firms that expanded their business in EMs showed a significantly higher endowment of international experience and marketing capabilities compared with firms that focused only on AMs. We found that the size of the firm is irrelevant: Even small firms can reach EMs by leveraging an appropriate set of capabilities.
<title>Research limitations/implications</title>Our study is cross-sectional and cannot provide a longitudinal view of the process of capability development. Future research will be needed to detail the process of capability development during the international expansion of firms into EMs.
<title>Practical implications</title>Regardless of size, firms that plan to enter EMs should develop specific capabilities, especially marketing capabilities, to increase the likelihood of success. Already internationalized firms have a considerable advantage due to the knowledge they have accumulated in other markets.
<title>Originality/value</title>This paper advances understanding of the process of the international expansion of firms in EMs from a resource-based perspective.

The Greening of Global Value Chains: Insights from the Furniture Industry( )

1 edition published in 2013 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Abstract : With increasing fragmentation of production between independent firms that are spatially dispersed and are responsible for different steps of the production process, a Global Value Chain approach is employed to examine how 'lead firms' shape the green features of upstream activities. Comparative case studies in the Italian furniture industry (Ikea, Valcucine) are used to show that lead firms implement 'hands-on' governing mechanisms to improve the environmental performance of their value chain partners -- moving away from the market but still avoiding vertical integration -- but also 'hands-off' mechanisms embedded in standards and design. Two governing approaches to the greening of value chains are identified: standard-driven and mentoring-driven, and these are used to provide some reflections on when we are likely to observe one or the other, and also to develop a future research agenda
Does Agglomeration Affect Exports? Evidence from Italian Local Labour Markets( )

1 edition published in 2016 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Abstract: This paper analyses whether and how agglomeration economies - related variety, specialisation and urbanisation - affect the export performance of Italian local labour markets (LLM). Adopting spatial econometric techniques, and controlling for potential non-linear effects, we find that related variety has a negligible effect on LLMs' export intensity, while the effect of specialisation economies is negative. On the contrary, urbanisation economies positively affect export intensity. The robustness of these results is tested and confirmed using an alternative (institutional-based) spatial weights matrix
