Enigma of the suicide bomber : a psychoanalytic essay by Franco De Masi( )

16 editions published between 2011 and 2019 in English and held by 1,870 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Why does someone resolve to take his own life in order to murder other people? What is the state of mind which allows him to commit such a monstrous act? This book explores the mental state that compels certain individuals to perform murderous, suicidal acts and emphasizes that, whereas a suicidal terrorist attack can be described as a crime against humanity, its protagonists cannot necessarily be classified as criminal or insane. There is no such a thing as a "typical" suicide terrorist - each attacker differs in age, sex, family status, culture, and even religion. Indeed, the common elements in suicide terrorism should perhaps be sought not so much in the individuals concerned as in the dynamics rooted in their group, family history or country. It may be extreme situations experienced by the group situations that are either objectively extreme or perceived as such that give rise to paradoxical behaviour at individual level. Psychoanalysis is well placed to consider this terrain. Freud, after all, soon disabused his reader of the belief that the less palatable aspects of psychic life were the exclusive preserve of some aberrant sub-category of people."--Publisher's website
The sadomasochistic perversion : the entity and the theories by Franco De Masi( )

14 editions published between 1999 and 2019 in English and held by 1,607 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In this book Franco de Masi examines the terminology used in the analysis of sadomasochism and surveys in detail the theories of other psychoanalysts. He explores the relationship between sadomasochism and other conditions, such as depression, psychosis and borderline states, and discusses the nature of evil in the broadest way possible."--Provided by publisher
Vulnerability to psychosis : a psychoanalytic study of the nature and therapy of the psychotic state by Franco De Masi( )

21 editions published between 2006 and 2019 in 3 languages and held by 1,567 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Franco De Masi is well known for his psychoanalytic work with patients suffering psychotic illnesses. In this book, De Masi addresses the human vulnerability to psychosis, but the modest title of his book belies the depth of its investigations and conclusions. De Masi invites the reader into a thoughtful, systematic exploration of many aspects of the complex problems associated with psychotic illnesses: its ontogenesis and the emotional crises that lead to the dominance of psychotic thinking, the function of psychosis with regard to reality, its eruption or progression (depending upon the type of psychosis involved) and, crucially, the difficult and painstaking task of treatment. This latter theme is explored in considerable detail by De Masi and is perhaps the most telling message of this book. Example after example of his engagement with patients illuminates his central objective - the gradual disinvestment by the patient of psychic energy allocated to ostensibly protective, but ultimately self-destructive, psychotic constructions and a re-investment in neurotic or more normal psychicreality - a world the patient has had to largely forsaken under the sway of delusion ... This is a relatively small book, but one that is large in scope and substantial in content. It provides the clinician with important perspectives on the origins and development of delusions in psychosis and offers a new perspective regarding the radical differences between delusional and normal or neurotic thought, and how these differences come about. It moves our thinking forward in an area that has too often been neglected, and for this we need to be grateful."--Paul Williams, from the Introduction
Herbert Rosenfeld at work : the Italian seminars by Herbert A Rosenfeld( )

7 editions published between 2001 and 2003 in English and held by 1,118 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Between 1978 and 1985 Dr Herbert Rosenfeld was one of a number of British analysts invited by a group of Societa di Psycoanalisi Italiani members to conduct a series of seminars and supervisions for the purpose of deepening and refining that group's clinical skills and theoretical understanding. This book is an illuminating record of that encounter, and a warm tribute to the significant influence of Rosenfeld's contribution
Working with difficult patients : from neurosis to psychosis by Franco De Masi( )

16 editions published between 2012 and 2019 in 3 languages and held by 998 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The author endeavours to set out a panorama of the main psychopathological entities as he has encountered them and indeed still encounters them in his clinical activity, presenting the material according to a criterion that highlights the differences between the individual case histories. A number of chapters in the second part of the book attempt to clarify the various psychic processes that underlie some frequently encountered psychopathologies."--Publisher's description
Karl Abraham : at the roots of analytic theory by Franco De Masi( )

6 editions published in 2018 in English and held by 136 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book describes the life of Karl Abraham, his work in Zurich and Berlin, and his scientific relationship with Freud. Abraham wrote important papers which form the base of clinical psychoanalysis and analytic technique: transference, countertransference, narcissism, envy and childhood trauma. In particular, the book takes into account the contribution Abraham made to understanding the problem of mourning and melancholia, not only through his works dedicated to this topic but also with his contribution within the continuous and scientific communication with Freud, as documented in the Freud-Abraham correspondence (Karnac, 2002). In the final chapter, 'What Abraham could not understand', the book describes how, when Abraham read the manuscript of Mourning and Melancholia, he did not fully understand some passages of Freud's text. He thought for a long time until he could envisage a solution to an unsolved problem - that of the way in which the patient succeeds in overcoming the mourning. This happens when the loved and lost object is reinstalled in his inner world, a very important concept in the Kleinian development."--Provided by publisher
Making death thinkable : a psychoanalytic contribution to the problem of the transience of life by Franco De Masi( Book )

6 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 113 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Man's perception of the finite nature of life is always present, resulting in anxieties of varying intensity, depending on the person's character and on the phases of life he or she is going through. De Masi is aware of the philosophical, sociological, religious or mystical approaches to the problem of death, however he chooses to focus on, and remain within, the theoretical frame of reference of psychoanalysis. He explores how different psychoanalytic theories have addressed the issue of death, its presence or absence in the unconscious, as well as the implications of the theories of the death instinct on a more strictly clinical and technical level." "Moreover, De Masi is interested in thinking about the psychological resources available to man, to make death thinkable, when its inevitable occurrence needs to be faced. He is concerned with the transformation of the thought of death, from an unthinkable catastrophic event, to a natural conclusion of one's existence." "As a psychoanalyst, he explores the quality of the anxiety accompanying the idea of the natural occurrence of death, which, however, is a perturbing presence to the mind of the average person of our Western civilization."--BOOK JACKET
A psychoanalytic approach to treating psychosis : genesis, psychopathology and case study by Franco De Masi( )

4 editions published in 2020 in English and held by 79 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This ground-breaking examination begins by clearly explaining complex terms and theories from the most significant thinkers in psychoanalysis. Split into 3 parts, it then explores the problems faced when following one specific technique for understanding the psychotic process. Practical as well as theoretical, Part 2 illustrates how to prepare an appropriate setting for the patient, including the importance of listening and the analyst's approach, as well as highlighting key features of the condition, such as delusions, hallucinations, infantile withdrawal and psychotic dreams. Acknowledging that psychosis is a psychic transformation which the mind works as a sensorial organ, the author asserts that the seeds are sown in childhood through emotional trauma, leading to withdrawal in a fantasy world"--

1 edition published in 2018 in French and held by 25 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

2 editions published in 2010 in French and held by 17 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

4 editions published in 2018 in Italian and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
