Precambrian ophiolites and related rocks( )

12 editions published between 2004 and 2008 in English and held by 384 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book emphasizes new developments in studies of Precambrian Geology that have documented ophiolites, ophiolitic fragments, and ophiolitic melanges in many Precambrian terranes. Each chapter is about individual Precambrian ophiolites or regions with numerous Precambrian ophiolites and covers field aspects, petrology, geochemistry, geochronology, and other descriptive aspects of these ophiolites. More theoretical or speculative aspects are covered in the concluding section of the book."--Jacket
Geological hazards : a sourcebook by Timothy M Kusky( Book )

8 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 378 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"From tidal waves and sandstorms of lava flows and glaciers, natural geological processes are often hazardous to human life. This book examines the scientific principles behind these processes, explaining how and why they pose a frequent threat." "Each chapter includes an extensive list of additional resources, featuring books, journal articles, Web sites, and contact information for relevant organizations. In addition to a general introduction, the volume also contains a detailed subject index and over 60 photographs, tables, and charts." "Written in a clear, engaging manner with numerous examples of famous or recent geological disasters, the Sourcebook is an excellent introduction to the topic for high school and college students, as well as a valuable resource for teachers, professors, journalists, and interested general readers. Government agencies and private relief organizations that deal with natural disasters will also find the book useful."--Jacket

The evolving continents : understanding processes of continental growth( Book )

11 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 253 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume honours the career of Brian F. Windley, who has been hugely influential in helping to achieve our current understanding of the evolution of the continental crust, and who has inspired many students and scientists to pursue studies on the evolution of the continents. It is organized into six sections, including: oceanic and island arc systems and continental growth; tectonics of accretionary orogens and continental growth; growth and stabilization of continental crust; collisions and intraplate processes; Precambrian tectonics and the birth of continents; and active tectonics and geomorphology of continental collision and growth zones

Facts On File's new The Living Earth series is a collection of accessible, lavishly illustrated reference books on geology and Earth science topics designed for high school students, researchers, teachers, and general readers. Jon Erickson, a geologist and accomplished geology and Earth science writer, offers an authoritative yet lively text that is complemented by a wealth of illustrations and photographs that portray the geologic wonders of our planet. Marine Geology: Exploring the New Frontiers of the Ocean is a fascinating examination of the intricate role oceans and water play in the origin and development of the universe. Substantially updated since it was first published nearly a decade ago, this revised edition features information on: coastal geology. the oceanic crust. oceanic currents. resources of the ocean. seabed formations. undersea mountains and chasms. underwater volcanoes. the world's oceans. Marine Geology includes an extensive index, a glossary of terms (many of which have pronunciation guides) to help readers better understand the vocabulary of marine geology, and a bibliography of current sources for further research. The Living Earth series is an indispensable resource for students and general readers who are just beginning their study of the Earth and for more advanced researchers seeking in-depth information

1 edition published in 2003 in English and held by 12 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The impact event that led to the extinction of the dinosaurs was not an isolated occurrence, for, as the foreword writer reminds us, a near-miss with an asteroid occurred in 1996. Erickson, an independent Colorado-based geologist, provides students beginning to study the Earth sciences and general readers with a lucid introduction to the bearers of such planetary impacts and their ongoing role in shaping our solar system. The book features numerous b & w illustrations, including recent photos taken from spacecraft, and a glossary with a pronunciation guide

Field guide to the Mesozoic accretionary complex in Kachemak Bay and Seldovia, South-Central, Alaska( Book )

1 edition published in 2009 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The shorelines of Kachemak and Seldovia Bays, southern Kenai Peninsula, provide superb exposures of Alaska's Mesozoic accretionary wedge. Although none of the outcrops can be reached via the main road network, they are reasonably accessible by Alaskan standards: those along Kachemak Bay can be reached within a few hours by boat from Homer, seas permitting, and those in Seldovia can be reached by local roads and trails. This field trip will visit outcrops that we studied between 1989 and 1993 during geological mapping of the Seldovia, 1:250,000-scale quadrangle as part of the USGS Alaska Mineral Resource Assessment Program, and by the National Science Foundation
