Since 1900, the piece has been performed yearly on Palm Sunday, having been popularized by Richard Wagner in 1843

The present release is sourced from the original tape kept in the archive of Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg. The tape needed only minimal reworking, as the sound quality is very good. After nearly seventy years, the odyssey of this recording concludes in time to commemorate Wilhelm Furtwangler's 125th Anniversary year
