Rogue economics : capitalism's new reality by Loretta Napoleoni( Book )

46 editions published between 2008 and 2014 in 9 languages and held by 704 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Respected economist and syndicated journalist Loretta Napoleoni shows how the world is being reshaped by dark economic forces. Rogue economics is creating victims out of millions of ordinary people whose lives have become trapped inside a fantasy bubble of consumerism. Around the globe private and public organisations have accumulated vast fortunes and enormous political influence by regulating, containing, and manipulating the market to their own advantage. From Eastern Europe's booming sex trade industry to China's online sweatshops, from al-Qaeda's underwriters to America's subprime mortgage lending scandal, Rogue economics exposes the paradoxical economic connections of the new global marketplace."--Provided by publisher

The Islamist phoenix : the Islamic State and the redrawing of the Middle East by Loretta Napoleoni( Book )

9 editions published between 2014 and 2015 in English and Chinese and held by 419 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From its birth in the late 1990s as the jihadist dream of terrorist leader Abu Musab al Zarqawi, the Islamic State (known by a variety of names, including ISIS, ISIL, and al Qaeda in Iraq) has grown into a massive enterprise, redrawing national borders across the Middle East and subjecting an area larger than the United Kingdom to its own vicious brand of Sharia law. In The Islamist Phoenix, world-renowned terrorism expert Loretta Napoleoni takes us beyond the headlines, demonstrating that while Western media portrays the Islamic State as little more than a gang of thugs on a winning streak, the organization is proposing a new model for nation building. Waging a traditional war of conquest to carve out the 21st-century version of the original Caliphate, IS uses modern technology to recruit and fundraise while engaging the local population in the day-to-day running of the new state. Rising from the ashes of failing jihadist enterprises, the Islamic State has shown a deep understanding of Middle Eastern politics, fully exploiting proxy war and shell-state tactics. This is not another terrorist network but a formidable enemy in tune with the new modernity of the current world disorder. As Napoleoni writes, "Ignoring these facts is more than misleading and superficial, it is dangerous. Know your enemy' remains the most important adage in the fight against terrorism."
Insurgent Iraq : Al Zarqawi and the new generation by Loretta Napoleoni( Book )

14 editions published between 2005 and 2014 in English and Dutch and held by 407 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

An unparalleled look into the Iraqi insurgency and the multitude of forces that continue to shape it, Insurgent Iraq: Al-Zarqawi and the New Generation presents a chilling account of the regrouping of terror networks, and the development of an Iraqi resistance since the invasion by coalition forces over two years ago. One of the world's leading specialists on terrorism, economist Loretta Napoleoni is uniquely qualified to make sense of the ways in which terror networks do and do not operate in Iraq, and what role they play in the Iraqi resistance. Is the insurgency in Iraq a counter-Crusade, a national liberation movement, or a civil war' With a complex understanding of all the intricacies inherent in such a question, Napoleoni provides a mindful discussion, offering a much-needed understanding of how the US occupation of Iraq has catalyzed the cultural, religious, and political divides within the country to create a wholly changed, more volatile landscape. Composed of independent Iraqi Jihadist groups, Islamo-Nationalist and Ba'ath party resistance, ethnic infighting between Sunni, Shi'ite and Kurd, and foreign suicide bombers, the resistance is a divided yet maintains one demand: the end of US occupation. Overall, Napoleoni offers a breakdown of the current political landscape in Iraq, and a renovated al-Qaeda. Insurgent Iraq is a necessary read for anyone concerned with the future of Iraq, or seeking greater insight into the U.S.'s critical role in the Middle East
Maonomics : why Chinese communists make better capitalists than we do by Loretta Napoleoni( Book )

23 editions published between 2010 and 2014 in 4 languages and held by 299 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The end of the cold war was thought to signal the triumph of Western capitalism over Communism. In Maonomics: Why Chinese Communists Make Better Capitalists than We Do, Napoleoni argues just the opposite: what we are witnessing instead is the beginning of the collapse of capitalism and the victory of "communism with a profit motive." Maonomics charts the prodigious ascent of the Chinese economic miracle and the parallel course of the West's ongoing insistence on misconstruing China and its economy even as we acknowledge its growing influence and importance. Maonomics is a warning call whereby Western governments can avoid economic collapse by learning how to understand more clearly what the lessons of the Chinese economy really are. Based on first-hand reporting from China during frequent visits in the last several years, Maonomics lends credence to the Chinese view and translates it for Western readers. For example, the Chinese too are attached to their vision of democracy, but it is different from ours. It isn't focused as much on voting as it is economic opportunity and the fair distribution of wealth and prosperity. Napoleoni also separates failed Leninist political ideology from true Marxist theory, showing that Marx's writings do not reject profit so long as it is used to benefit the people. Marx's dictatorship of the proletariat is being realized in China, she argues, where giant steps forward are being made in the name of progress and the wellbeing and prosperity of the Chinese people. Looking at the Chinese economy up close, any economist would be hard pressed to say that they are not on the right track. Here Loretta Napoleoni offers a front row seat on the greatest show on earth: the peaceful economic revolution that is shifting the balance of power in the world from West to East
Terrorism and the economy : how the war on terror is bankrupting the world by Loretta Napoleoni( Book )

15 editions published between 2009 and 2010 in 3 languages and held by 264 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Economist Loretta Napoleoni traces the link between the finances of the war on terror and the global economic crisis, finding connections from Dubai to London to Las Vegas that politicians and the media have at best ignored. In launching military and propaganda wars in the Middle East, America overlooked the war of economic independence waged by Al-Qaeda. The Patriot Act boosted the black market economy, and the war on terror prompted a rise in oil prices that led to food riots and distracted governments from the trillion-dollar machinations of Wall Street. Consumers and taxpayers, spurred by propaganda fears, were lured into crushing global debt. Napoleoni shows that if we do not face up to the many serious connections between our response to 9/11 and the financial crisis, we will never work our way out of the looming global recession that now threatens our way of life."--Jacket

Merchants of men : how jihadists and ISIS turned kidnapping and refugee trafficking into a multibillion-dollar business by Loretta Napoleoni( Book )

8 editions published in 2016 in 3 languages and held by 109 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Every day, a powerful and sophisticated underground business delivers thousands of refugees along the Mediterranean coasts of Europe. A new breed of criminals, risen from the political chaos of post-9/11 Western foreign policy and the fiasco of the Arab Spring, controls it. These merchants of men are intertwined with jihadist organisations such as al Qaeda. Previously, they have prospered from smuggling cocaine from West Africa and kidnapping Westerners. More recently, the destabilisation of Syria and Iraq, coupled with the rise of ISIS, offered them new business opportunities in the Middle East, from selling Western hostages to jihadist groups to trafficking in refugees numbering in the millions, generating billions of dollars annually...Merchants of Men is based on exclusive access to former hostages, counter-terrorism experts, members of security services, and hostage negotiators actively involved in ransom bargaining and rescue missions, among many others. In a gripping narrative, Loretta Napoleoni describes the brutal processes of kidnapping and human trafficking from a personal and global level, and uncovers the ruthless business models that lie behind them

6 editions published between 2014 and 2015 in Italian and held by 42 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Maonomics : why chinese communists make better capitalists than we do by Loretta Napoleoni( Book )

1 edition published in 2011 in English and held by 35 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In Maonomics : why Chinese communists make better capitalists than we do, bestselling author and economist Loretta Napoleoni probes the Chinese economic miracle to find whether, behind it, there is a uniquely Chinese vision of democracy, one that might inspire Westerners. Highlighting China's focus on economic opportunity and the fair distribution of wealth and prosperity rather than the Western emphasis on voting, Napoleoni asks provocative questions such as: Is China realizing Marx's goal of an egalitarian society that uses profit to benefit its people? The end of the Cold War was thought to signal the triumph of Western capitalism over communism. In Maonomics, Napoleoni shines a light on the peaceful economic revolution that is shifting the balance of power in the world from West to East"--Back cover
China - der bessere Kapitalismus : Was der Westen vom Reich der Mitte lernen kann by Loretta Napoleoni( Book )

8 editions published between 2011 and 2013 in German and held by 32 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In ihrem Buch zeichne
Il contagio by Loretta Napoleoni( Book )

5 editions published between 2011 and 2012 in Italian and held by 26 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Die Rückkehr des Kalifats : der Islamische Staat und die Neuordnung des Nahen Ostens by Loretta Napoleoni( Book )

3 editions published in 2015 in German and held by 26 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Was unterscheidet den IS heute grundlegend von anderen terroristischen Organisationen, allen voran al-Qaida?
The coming Balkan caliphate : the threat of radical Islam to Europe and the West by Christopher Deliso( Book )

5 editions published in 2007 in English and Undetermined and held by 10 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

With all eyes currently focused on the widening conflict in the Middle East and the terrorist threat coming from the region, the West is in danger of overlooking a potent new battleground in the greater "war on terror"--The Balkans. This historically volatile region saw some of the worst violence of the late 20th century in the Yugoslav Wars of Secession. During these conflicts, stunningly shortsighted and politically motivated policies of the United States and its allies directly allowed Islamic mujahedin and terrorist-related entities to establish a foothold in the region--just as with the progenitors of the Taliban a decade earlier in Afghanistan. Although the 9/11 attacks caused a partial reassessment of Western policy, it may already be too late for a region still largely ignored. The proliferation of foreign fundamentalist groups has had a cancerous effect on traditional Balkan Islamic communities, challenging their legitimacy in unprecedented and often violent ways. Well-funded groups like the Saudi-backed Wahabbis continue to exploit internal schisms within local communities, while the international administrations in Bosnia and Kosovo have actually strengthened the grip of local mafia groups--business partners of terrorists. Worst of all, the Western peacekeepers' chronic "don't rock the boat" mentality has allowed extremist groups to operate unchallenged. Nevertheless, regional demographic and cultural trends, coinciding with an increasingly hostile attitude in the larger Muslim world over Western military actions and perceived symbolic provocations, indicate that the lawless Balkans will become increasingly valuable as a strategic base for Islamic radicals over the next two decades. Utilizing the post-al-Qaeda tactics of a decentralized jihad carried out through small, independent cells ("leaderless resistance") while seeking to fundamentally and violently remold Muslim societies, such Balkan-based extremists pose a unique and tangible threat to Western security
