Kingship and politics in the late ninth century : Charles the Fat and the end of the Carolingian Empire by Simon MacLean( )

20 editions published between 2003 and 2007 in English and held by 1,760 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is the first major study in any language of the collapse of the pan-European Carolingian empire and the reign of its last ruler, Charles III 'the Fat' (876-888). The later decades of the empire are conventionally seen as a dismal period of decline and fall, scarred by internal feuding, unfettered aristocratic ambition and Viking onslaught. This book offers a fresh interpretation, arguing that previous generations of historians misunderstood the nature and causes of the end of the empire, and neglected many of the relatively numerous sources for this period. Topics covered include the significance of aristocratic power; political structures; the possibilities and limits of kingship; developments in royal ideology; the struggle with the Vikings and the nature of regional political identities. In proposing new explanations for the empire's disintegration, the book has broader implications for our understanding of this formative period of European history more generally
The Carolingian world by Marios Costambeys( Book )

15 editions published between 2005 and 2016 in English and held by 385 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

At its height, the Carolingian empire spanned a million square kilometres of western Europe - from the English Channel to central Italy and northern Spain, and from the Atlantic to the fringes of modern Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic. As the largest political unit for centuries, the empire dominated the region and left an enduring legacy for European culture. This comprehensive survey traces this great empire's history, from its origins around 700, with the rise to dominance of the Carolingian dynasty, through its expansion by ruthless military conquest and political manoeuvring in the eighth century, to the struggle to hold the empire together in the ninth. It places the complex political narrative in context, giving equal consideration to vital themes such as beliefs, peasant society, aristocratic culture and the economy. Accessibly written and authoritative, this book offers distinctive perspectives on a formative period in European history
Atlas of medieval Europe by Angus MacKay( Book )

14 editions published between 1997 and 2007 in English and held by 287 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Atlas of Medieval Europe covers the period from the fall of the Roman Empire through to the beginnings of the Renaissance, spreading from the Atlantic coast to the Russian steppes. Each map approaches a separate issue or series of events in medieval history, and a commentary locates it in its broader context." "The maps provide a vivid representation of the development of nations, peoples and social structures. As well as charting political and military events, they illustrate the fluctuation of frontiers and patterns of settlement. This second edition has over forty new maps covering a variety of topics including the Moravian Empire, environmental change, the travels and correspondence of Froissart and travellers in the east, and the layout of great castles and palaces. Thorough coverage is also given to geographically peripheral areas such as Portugal, Poland, Scandinavia and Ireland." "The Atlas of Medieval Europe brings the complex and colourful history of the Middle Ages to life. With over 180 maps, expert commentaries and an extensive bibliography, this is the essential reference guide to Medieval Europe."--Jacket

Ottonian queenship by Simon MacLean( Book )

11 editions published in 2017 in 3 languages and held by 237 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is the first major study in English of the queens of the Ottonian dynasty (919-1024). The Ottonians were a family from Saxony who are often regarded as the founders of the medieval German kingdom. They were the most successful of all the dynasties to emerge from the wreckage of the pan-European Carolingian Empire after it disintegrated in 888, ruling as kings and emperors in Germany and Italy and exerting indirect hegemony in France and in Eastern Europe. It has long been noted by historians that Ottonian queens were peculiarly powerful - indeed, among the most powerful of the entire Middle Ages. Their reputations, particularly those of the empresses Theophanu (d.991) and Adelheid (d.999) have been commemorated for a thousand years in art, literature, and opera. But while the exceptional status of the Ottonian queens is well appreciated, it has not been fully explained. 'Ottonian queenship' offers an original interpretation of Ottonian queenship through a study of the sources for the dynasty's six queens, and seeks to explain it as a phenomenon with a beginning, middle, and end

Representations of Power in Medieval Germany : 800-1500( )

1 edition published in 2010 in English and held by 15 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book brings together a group of leading experts on the political history of Germany and the medieval Empire from the Carolingian period to the end of the Middle Ages. Its purpose is to introduce and analyze key concepts in the study of medieval political culture. The representation of power by means of texts, buildings and images is a theme which has long interested historians. However, recent debates and methodological insights have fundamentally altered the way this subject is perceived, opening it up to perspectives unnoticed by its pioneers in the middle of the twentieth century. By taking account of these debates and insights, this volume explores a series of fundamental questions. How was power defined in a medieval context? How was it claimed, legitimized and disputed? What were the moral parameters against which its exercise was judged? How did different spheres of political power interact? What roles were played by texts, images and rituals in the maintenance of, and challenges to, the political order? The contributors bring varied and original approaches to these and other questions, illuminating the complex power relationships which determined the changing political history of medieval Germany
