1 edition published in 2010 in English and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

T was phenomenally successful in the air, breathtakingly decisive on the ground--and suddenly the war in the Persian Gulf was over, with an overwhelming victory for the allied forces. But what really happened? Why did the air war work so well? Why did the massive allied casualties many predicted for the ground phase never materialize? Why was it all so easy, when American intelligence had said it would be so hard? And what was the impact of using a war plan devised to fight the Warsaw Pact against a third world country? On this thought provoking recording, some of NPR's top reporters--Neal Conan, Deborah Amos, Ted Clark and Anne Garrels--examine these and other questions from the Gulf War

Naked in Baghdad by Anne Garrels( Book )

3 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

As NPR's senior foreign correspondent, Garrels has covered conflicts in Chechnya, Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan, and elsewhere. She is renowned for the direct, down-to-earth reportage and her independent-minded insight into what she observes. One of only sixteen un-embedded American journalists who stayed in the Palestine Hotel in Baghdad throughout the American invasion, Garrels was uniquely placed to describe our latest war. Her Iraqi driver becomes her friend and confidant, often serving as her eyes and ears among the populace and taking her where no other reporter was able to penetrate. His opinions and poignant personal story provide a trenchant counterpoint to the headline news.--From publisher description
Putin country : a journey into the real Russia by Anne Garrels( )

4 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

More than twenty years ago, the longtime NPR correspondent Anne Garrels began to visit the region of Chelyabinsk, an aging military-industrial center a thousand miles east of Moscow that is home to the Russian nuclear program. Her goal was to chart the social and political aftershocks of the USSR's collapse. On her trips to an area once closed to the West, Garrels discovered a populace for whom the new democratic freedoms were as traumatic as they were delightful. The region suffered a severe economic crisis in the early 1990s, and the next twenty years would only bring more turmoil as well as a growing identity crisis and antagonism toward foreigners. The city of Chelyabinsk became richer and more cosmopolitan, even as corruption and intolerance grew more entrenched. Here, Garrels crafts a necessary portrait of the nation's heartland
