Historical dictionary of the lesbian and gay liberation movements by JoAnne Myers( )

10 editions published between 2013 and 2017 in English and held by 1,127 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Not so long ago hardly anything was said of the Lesbian Liberation Movement and the Gay Liberation Movement, indeed, the terms gay and lesbian were not even used if some other expression could be found. Today, by contrast, hardly a day passes when something important does not occur, and is carried by the major media and disseminated on more personal levels through blogs and the social media. If anything, there is perhaps too much "news" and not enough "information." Obviously, a book like this cannot keep up with the news, but it can do something equally important when it comes to information, by reminding us of the past and what has been going and just how fast events are moving. The Historical Dictionary of the Lesbian and Gay Liberation Movements covers the history of this movement through a cross-referenced dictionary with over 1000 entries on specific countries and regions, influential historical figures, laws that criminalized same-sex sexuality, various historical terms that have been used to refer to aspects of same-sex love, and contemporary events and legal decisions, but a look at the chronology gives a particularly acute feeling for the passage of time, and the bibliography offers other sources of information and reflection. This enhances the value of this historical dictionary not only for those within the movements but also those outside who do not quite understand them."--Publisher's description
The A to Z of the lesbian liberation movement : still the rage by JoAnne Myers( )

4 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 485 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Lesbian Liberation Movement is both a movement that encompasses liberating a sexual practice from stigmatization and a political movement challenging the dual oppression of women by the patriarchy's assumption of heterosexuality and male supremacy. Over the years, much has been written on homosexuality and the Gay Liberation Movement, yet generally the focus has been on male homosexuals, especially male homosexual activity and the politics that activity raises." "The A to Z of the Lesbian Liberation Movement: Still the Rage is a comprehensive overview and resource for one of the most invisible social political movements. Through its chronology, contextual overview, dictionary entries covering people, laws, terminology, issues, and countries, and an extensive bibliography of primary resources and current work, this book helps to make the still-active movement visible." --Book Jacket
Individualism : the cultural logic of modernity by Zubin Meer( )

1 edition published in 2011 in English and held by 372 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Individualism: The Cultural Logic of Modernity explores ideas of the modern sovereign individual in the western cultural tradition. Divided into two sections, this volume surveys the history of western individualism in both its early and later forms: chiefly from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries, and then individualism in the twentieth century. These essays boldly challenge not only the exclusionary framework and self-assured teleology, but also the metaphysical certainty of that remarkably tenacious narrative on 'the rise of the individual.' Some essays question the correlation of realist characterization to the eighteenth-century British novel, while others champion the continuing political relevance of selfhood in modernist fiction over and against postmodern nihilism. Yet others move to the foreground underappreciated topics, such as the role of courtly cultures in the development of individualism. Taken together, the essays provocatively revise and enrich our understanding of individualism as the generative premise of modernity itself. Authors especially considered include Locke, Defoe, Freud, and Adorno. The essays in this volume first began as papers presented at a conference of the American Comparative Literature Association held at Princeton University. Among the contributors are Nancy Armstrong, Deborah Cook, James Cruise, David Jenemann, Lucy McNeece, Vivasvan Soni, Frederick Turner, and Philip Weinstein

"The Lesbian Liberation Movement (LLM) is both a movement that encompasses liberating a sexual practice from stigmatization, and a political movement challenging the dual oppression of women by the patriarchy's assumption of male supremacy and heterosexuality. Over the years, much has been written on homosexuality, and the Gay Liberation Movement (GLM), yet much of the focus has been on male homosexuals, especially male homosexual activity and the politics that that activity raises." "The Historical Dictionary of the Lesbian Liberation Movement: Still the Rage is a comprehensive overview and resource guide for one of the most invisible social political movements: the Lesbian Liberation Movement. This book helps to make the still-active movement visible - the history, successes, setbacks, controversies, and issues. This book is a good secondary resource for those studying this social political movement, containing a chronology, contextual overview, dictionary entries that cover persons, laws, terminology, issues, and countries, and an extensive bibliography of primary resources and current work." "A reference work, this book should be in all libraries and used by researchers studying the Lesbian Liberation Movement."--Jacket
