Academic freedom imperiled : the McCarthy era at the University of Nevada by J. Dee Kille( )

3 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 1,331 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The "Red scare" of the 1950s created a national crisis that challenged concepts of loyalty and freedom of speech in every corner of American society. The crisis was especially problematic in American universities, where traditions of academic freedom were at odds with political issues growing out of the Cold War. The University of Nevada in Reno was no exception." "J. Dee Kille's account of the crisis "on the hill" records a critical period in Nevada's recent history and serves as a powerful case study of the devastating impact of McCarthyism and its atmosphere of suspicion and repression on one American-university campus during this turbulent era in the nation's history."--Jacket
United by gold and glory : the making of mining culture in Goldfield, Nevada, 1906-1908 by J. Dee Kille( Book )

3 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This dissertation examines mining culture in Goldfield, Nevada, between 1906 and late 1908. The precepts of mining culture defined in this study-manliness, fairness, brotherhood, mutualism, and Americanness-were intrinsic to all citizens of Goldfield and its mining society. Three major events in Goldfield represent sites of negotiation or contestation that redefined mining culture. These were a world championship prizefight, a series of general strikes, and a referendum on the creation of a state police force. The prizefight encouraged unity within the society and fostered a communal conception of mining culture. The various labor actions and Lockouts challenged that unity and highlighted disparities among competing visions. The referendum provided the final opportunity delineate mining culture. The establishment of a state police force ultimately validated the values and symbols of industrial mining culture."--Abstract
