Global governance, global government : institutional visions for an evolving world system by Luis Cabrera( )

15 editions published between 2011 and 2012 in English and held by 1,612 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Puts commentators on global government in conversation about their often provocative global institutional visions. Recent years have seen a remarkable resurgence in rigorous thought on global government by leading thinkers in international relations, economics, and political theory. Not since the immediate post-World War II period have so many scholars given serious attention to possibilities for global integration. This book brings together some of these scholars into a conversation about their often provocative global institutional visions. The chapters explore whether a world state should be viewed as inevitable, ways in which global moral and political communities might be sustained, and reasons to reject world government in favor of improvements to governance in the United Nations and other institutions. The book will be of interest to students of international relations, political theory, international economics, security, and gender studies
Political theory of global justice : a cosmopolitan case for the world state by Luis Cabrera( )

16 editions published between 2004 and 2006 in English and held by 1,162 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Cosmopolitan thinkers challenge the widely held belief that we owe more to our co-citizens than to those in other countries. This book offers a moral argument for world government, claiming that not only do we have strong obligations to people elsewhere, but that accountable integration among nation-states will help ensure that everyone can lead a decent life." "This book will appeal to all those interested in political philosophy and the processes and potential of globalization."--Jacket
The practice of global citizenship by Luis Cabrera( )

15 editions published between 2010 and 2013 in English and held by 974 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In this novel account of global citizenship, Luis Cabrera argues that all individuals have a global duty to contribute directly to human rights protections and to promote rights-enhancing political integration between states. The Practice of Global Citizenship blends careful moral argument with compelling narratives from field research among unauthorized immigrants, activists seeking to protect their rights, and the 'Minuteman' activists striving to keep them out. Immigrant-rights activists, especially those conducting humanitarian patrols for border-crossers stranded in the brutal Arizona desert, are shown as embodying aspects of global citizenship. Unauthorized immigrants themselves are shown to be enacting a form of global 'civil' disobedience, claiming the economic rights central to the emerging global normative charter, while challenging the restrictive membership regimes that are the norm in the current global system. Cabrera also examines the European Union, seeing it as a crucial laboratory for studying the challenges inherent in expanding citizen membership"--Résumé de l'éditeur
Institutional cosmopolitanism( )

6 editions published in 2018 in English and held by 274 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Is a global institutional order composed of sovereign states fit for cosmopolitan moral purpose? Cosmopolitan political theorists challenge claims that states, nations or other collectives have ultimate moral significance. They focus instead on individuals: on what they share and on what each may owe to all the others. They see principles of distributive justice - and increasingly political justice - applying with force in a global system in which billions continue to suffer from severe poverty and deprivation, political repression, interstate violence and other ills. Cosmopolitans diverge widely, however, on the institutional implications of their shared moral view. Some argue that the current system of competing sovereign states tends to promote unjust0outcomes and stands in need of deep structural reform. Others reject such claims and contend that justice can be pursued through transforming the orientations and conduct of individual and collective agents, especially states. 0This volume brings together prominent political theorists and International Relations scholars - including some skeptics of cosmopolitanism - in a far-ranging dialogue about the institutional implications of the cosmopolitan approach. Contributors offer penetrating analyses of both continuing and emerging issues around state sovereignty, democratic autonomy and accountability, and the promotion and protection of human rights. They also debate potential reforms of the current global system, from the transformation of cities and states to the creation of some encompassing world government capable of effectively promoting cosmopolitan aims
Microfinance, rights and global justice by Tom Sorell( )

9 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 249 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Microfinance - the practice of providing small loans to promote entrepreneurial activity among those with few or no financial assets - is increasingly seen as a sustainable means of aiding the global poor. Perhaps its most influential advocate, Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus, has claimed that there is a human right to microfinance, given its potential for poverty alleviation. This book directs critical philosophical attention at this very widely used and praised poverty-reducing measure. In chapters that discuss microfinance schemes and models around the world, internationally renowned contributors address important questions about both the positive impact of microfinance and cases of exploitation and repayment pressure. Exploring how far microfinance can or should be situated within broader concerns about justice, this volume sheds light on ethical issues that have so far received little systematic attention, and it advances discussion on new human rights, exploitation, and global justice"--Back cover
The humble cosmopolitan : rights, diversity, and trans-state democracy by Luis Cabrera( )

6 editions published in 2020 in English and held by 206 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Cosmopolitanism is said by many critics to be arrogant. In emphasizing universal principles and granting no fundamental moral significance to national or other group belonging, it wrongly treats those making non-universalist claims as not authorized to speak, while treating those in non-Western societies as not qualified. This book works to address such objections. It does so in part by engaging the work of B.R. Ambedkar, architect of India's 1950 Constitution and revered champion of the country's Dalits (formerly "untouchables"). Ambedkar cited universal principles of equality and rights in confronting domestic exclusions and the "arrogance" of caste. He sought to advance forms of political humility, or the affirmation of equal standing within political institutions and openness to input and challenge within them. This book examines how an "institutional global citizenship" approach to cosmopolitanism could similarly advance political humility, in supporting the development of input and challenge mechanisms beyond the state. It employs a grounded normative theory method, taking insights for the model from field research among Dalit activists pressing for domestic reforms through the UN human rights regime, and from their critics in the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party. Insights also are taken from Turkish protesters challenging a rising domestic authoritarianism, and from UK Independence Party members demanding "Brexit" from the European Union-in part because of possibilities that predominantly Muslim Turkey will join. Overall, it is shown, an appropriately configured institutional cosmopolitanism should orient fundamentally to political humility rather than arrogance, while holding significant potential for advancing global rights protections and more equitable rights specifications"--

Magnetoestratigrafía de las sucesiones del mioceno medio y superior del Vallès Occidental : depresión del Vallès-Penedès, N.E. de España: implicaciones biocronológicas y cronoestratigráficas by Miguel Garcés Crespo( Book )

3 editions published between 1995 and 2019 in Spanish and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

-- TDX

Controls on the development of sedimentary sequences in continental basins : examples from the Cenozoic of Iberia by Luis Valero Montesa( )

2 editions published between 2015 and 2016 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The first goal of this thesis is to provide accurate and complete age models for key basins of Iberia. The Ebro, Almazán, and As Pontes basins were chosen because of their geological importance and because long sections with overlapping ages were available. All the studied records encompass a long time span (>7-Ma), which may be used for research in a wide range of time-scales. In particular, we focused in assessing the impact in the stratigraphy of the very long-term Milankovitch cycles (> 1Ma) and their relationship in the generation of sedimentary sequences at basin scales. Disentangling such relationship may shed light into the tectonic or climatic origin of observed sedimentary sequences. In parallel, the development of age models allows for a precise quantification of sedimentation rates. The results of this PhD project provide insights on the expression of the Milankovitch cycles in continental basins and also on the relationship between accommodation and sediment supply in the development of sedimentary sequences. Our data together with results from other case studies allows for a discussion about the pathways in which Milankovitch cycles affected the continental sedimentary records through a mass-balance approach. In order to undertake these subjects, three independent studies have been carried out In the Ebro Basin, it has been shown that the location of the lacustrine depocenters was conditioned by the migration of the subsidence distribution due to the thrust-belt structuring and the subsequent foreland evolution. Despite tectonics, the superimposed signal of climate was found to be the main cause of lake level variation. Times of orbital eccentricity maxima are associated to lake level highstands, indicating a positive water balance. Intervals with high-amplitude precession cycles, due to eccentricity modulation, are seen as the drivers of water recharge. Oppositely to the Ebro Basin, the As Pontes Basin is a small basin that lacked a central lake system during the studied interval. The occurrence of peatlands in the distal parts, made the system very sensitive to shifts in the terrigenous input. In As Pontes, it has been shown that climatic stability at times of eccentricity minima appears associated to peat development and burial. This is likely more linked to resilient vegetation cover and equilibrium geomorphologic profiles, which reduced the sediment supply. The cyclic arrangement in the depocenters was shaped by changes in the sediment supply, which may increase, and dilute the accumulation of organic matter, rather than by variable lake level. Despite there is not enough resolution as to test for precession or obliquity, the stacking pattern shows no evidence of these higher frequency orbital cycles. It suggests a control of eccentricity on the expression of orbital forcing in a clastic-dominated system. The analysis carried out in the Almazán Basin illustrates how the distribution of the depositional elements, their internal architecture, and the sedimentation rates are consequence of variations in the AS/SS ratio (Accommodation/Sediment supply). This makes the AS/SS ratio an excellent marker for the mass balance variations, the distribution of the total volume of sediment along a basin, allowing for a quantification of the response of a basin to extrinsic changes, which are mainly climate and tectonics. Although if a single depositional element is analysed at short time scales, the ratio also may include the autogenic variations

SIMSAFADIM-CLASTIC : Modelización 3D de transporte y sedimentación clástica subacuática by Òscar Gratacós Torrà( )

2 editions published between 2004 and 2019 in Spanish and Catalan and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

-- TDX
