Reading EEGs : a practical approach by L. John Greenfield( Book )

16 editions published between 2009 and 2021 in English and held by 166 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The concepts of pattern recognition are developed in a logical fashion based on appearance rather than disease process. The book teaches waveform recognition so that the reader can generate a differential diagnosis based on that recognition. This book also incorporates a question-and-answer format that is effective for students at multiple levels of training. A unique feature of the book is that it follows a teaching methodology in which concepts are developed sequentially and logically
Quantitative neuroscience : models, algorithms, diagnostics, and therapeutic applications by P. M Pardalos( )

4 editions published between 2004 and 2013 in English and held by 19 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Advances in the field of signal processing, nonlinear dynamics, statistics, and optimization theory, combined with marked improvement in instrumenta tion and development of computers systems, have made it possible to apply the power of mathematics to the task of understanding the human brain. This verita ble revolution already has resulted in widespread availability of high resolution neuroimaging devices in clinical as well as research settings. Breakthroughs in functional imaging are not far behind. Mathematical tech niques developed for the study of complex nonlinear systems and chaos already are being used to explore the complex nonlinear dynamics of human brain phys iology. Global optimization is being applied to data mining expeditions in an effort to find knowledge in the vast amount of information being generated by neuroimaging and neurophysiological investigations. These breakthroughs in the ability to obtain, store and analyze large datasets offer, for the first time, exciting opportunities to explore the mechanisms underlying normal brain func tion as well as the affects of diseases such as epilepsy, sleep disorders, movement disorders, and cognitive disorders that affect millions of people every year. Ap plication of these powerful tools to the study of the human brain requires, by necessity, collaboration among scientists, engineers, neurobiologists and clini cians. Each discipline brings to the table unique knowledge, unique approaches to problem solving, and a unique language

2 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"When you use Neurology for the Boards to prepare for exams, you draw on the combined experience of three neurologists who are fresh from their own board exams and know exactly what you need: a methodical review of the core material candidates must master. Beginning with neuroanatomy and basic science, the book progresses to diseases and syndromes as well as their evaluation and treatment; the appropriate scope and depth of coverage. Neurology for the Boards addresses all the clinically important aspects of neurology, plus the esoteric minutiae beloved by the board examiners; fast access to specifics; and an outline format facilitates easy study and retention." "Field tested by residents and medical students at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Neurology for the Boards helps you manage your study time effectively and concentrate on the material that is most likely to appear on exams." "This convenient guide is also an excellent tool for patient evaluation and management. Buy it to help you face the boards with confidence - and keep it for frequent reference in practice."--Jacket
Are people polite to computers? : responses to computer-based interviewing systems by Clifford Ivar Nass( Book )

2 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The present studies were designed to test whether people are "polite" to computers. The tendency for people to engage in polite, "socially desirable" behavior in interpersonal interaction has been well-documented in the social psychological literature: An interviewer who directly asks about him- or herself will receive more positive and less varied responses than if the same question is posed by a third party. Two experiments were designed to determine if the same phenomenon occurs in human-computer interaction. In the first experiment (N = 30), participants performed a task with a text-based computer, and were then interviewed about the performance of that computer on one of three loci: 1) the same computer; 2) a paper-and-pencil questionnaire; 3) a different (but identical) text-based computer. Consistent with the politeness prediction, same-computer participants evaluated the computer more positively and more homogeneously than did either paper-and-pencil or different-computer participants. Experiment 2 (N = 30) replicated the results with voice-based computer(s). Implications for computer-based interviewing are discussed

Is It the Teacher or Is It Memorex? Responding to Student Essays Using Audio Cassettes by Paul R Carney( Book )

1 edition published in 1995 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

An informal study attempted to determine if audio-taped comments on student papers in freshman composition were as efficient and effective as those actually written on student papers. An instructor began the experiment in the third week of the semester--after he had already returned one batch of papers with written comments on them. Students supplied the audio cassette and numbered the sentences of their paper for easy reference; the instructor used a voice-activated machine to avoid the hassle of pushing "record" and "stop." Assessment surveys showed that 96 of the 110 students involved in the study preferred the cassette to the pen. Excerpts from written student comments show enthusiastic endorsement of the cassette grading method. In comparing his written comments to his recorded one, the instructor notes that he is more likely to "talk" to the student on tape as opposed to "grading" or "correcting" with a pen. Second, complimentary comments are more prevalent on tape. Third, the instructor paid more attention to global comments on the paper and less attention to grammar penalties. Fourth, the cassette alerted him to counter-productive tendencies inherent in written comments; cassette grading has tamed his predatory impulse with the pen. Finally, the instructor found cassette comments more efficient time-wise. The student assessment of audio evaluation instrument is attached. (TB)
Retention Efforts Could They Be Misdirected? by Paul R Carney( Book )

1 edition published in 1979 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Junior college transfer students at Florida State University who dropped out of the university were surveyed to determine their reasons for leaving and their perceptions of the university. In addition to an analysis of questionnaire results for the total sample of respondents, two subgroups were analyzed separately: (1) students who received financial aid and those who did not, and (2) students with high self-reported grade point averages (GPA) (3.01-4.00), students with medium GPAs (2.01-3.00), and students with low GPAs (0-2.00). Respondents were almost equally divided between the sexes; 93 percent were between the ages of 19 and 29; and 89 percent were Caucasians. Responses of the total group indicated: 26.7 percent did not have enough money to go to school; 20.5 percent were dissatisfied with the major department; 20.1 percent had low grades; 18.0 percent had personal problems; and 17.2 percent moved out of the area. Characteristics or services of the university that provided great satisfaction and little satisfaction and factors that would have most encouraged the students to stay are also presented. Variables that significantly differentiated financial aid recipients from nonrecipients are: conflict between job and studies, insufficient financial aid, counseling/guidance services, and financial aid opportunities. Additional analyses are provided. (SW)

Multivariate Analysis in Institutional Research. Air Forum 1979 Paper by Paul R Carney( Book )

1 edition published in 1979 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This introduction to the theory and application of multivariate analysis is designed to assist institutional researchers who are interested in using these techniques to analyze issues within their respective institutions. A brief introduction to multivariate theory, consisting of a rationale for multivariate statistics and an overview of selected multivariate techniques, is presented. Applications of multivariate analysis in institutional research, obtained from a review of the literature in the field, are discussed, with particular emphasis given to studies because of their utilization of intrainstitutional, rather than interinstitutional data. The studies described used a variety of multivariate statistical procedures, including multivariate analysis of variance, discriminant analysis, canonical correlation, and factor analysis. Possible applications are suggested in the traditional institutional research areas of students, faculty, academic programs, resource allocation, and institutional evaluation. Additional potential applications of multivariate analysis in institutional research are also suggested, including using discriminant analysis as a classification technique. (Sc)

In Classroom Mentor Teachers: An Addition to Mentor Teachers by Paul R Carney( Book )

2 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

There have been numerous studies done on the impact that mentor teachers and new teacher induction plans have on the new teachers' success in the first couple of years. A lot of these studies were done in an attempt not only to determine how to attract good teachers, but to retain them. It is our hope in this article to also determine if by having a classroom coach and teacher mentors in place, we can mold these new teachers into a strong cultural fit. This article looks at what impact an inside-the-classroom coach would have in addition to the benefits previously obtained from having mentor teachers that teach their own classes. Recent retired teachers and administrators serve as great untapped resources and have the time available to spend in the classroom while the traditional mentor teachers have their own classroom responsibilities and are unable to give the new teachers their undivided attention for a longer period of time. The school in this study, the Middle Bucks Institute of Technology (mbit), has a two-year induction plan utilizing the skills of three mentor teachers and one classroom coach to provide support to five new teachers. Two of the mentor teachers are each assigned to mentor two new teachers and one mentor teacher is assigned to mentor one new teacher. The new classroom coach circulates among the classroom of the five new teachers during instructional time to observe and advise
