Prior to the outbreak of the second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945), the Japanese first invaded Manchuria in 1931. As Manchurian refugees pour into the city of Shanghai, playwright Tian Han and young composer Nie Er find inspiration of the highest order. Spearheading the movement that calls for volunteers to fight for their country's freedom, Tian Han writes a patriotic song entitled "March of the Volunteers" and Nie Er composes the music. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, it was officially designated as China's National Anthem
