"In a broadcast to the nation in September 1940 King George VI announced the institution of the George Cross--a civilian equivalent of the Victoria Cross awarded to recognize the many acts of supreme gallantry being performed outside of the battlefield. From Thomas Alderson, the first recipient of the medal, who heroically rescued several people from trapped houses during one terrible Blitz night, to Lance Corporal Matthew Croucher, who threw himself onto a live grenade in the Helmand province to save the lives of his comrades (and somehow survived), to Barbara Harrison, an air stewardess who died in 1968 after helping many passengers escape from an onboard fire, this book tells the amazing stories of everyone of the George Cross's 159 direct recipients. George Cross Heroes pays tribute to the extraordinary courage displayed by so many of the commonwealth's men and women in so many incredible situations over the last 70 years."--Publisher description
Well, you did ask : why the UK voted to leave the EU by Michael A Ashcroft( Book )

4 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 52 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The UK’s vote to leave the European Union shocked the world – not to mention many people in Britain. What it revealed about our country is at least as significant for the future of politics as Brexit itself. Drawing on more than two years of intensive research by Lord Ashcroft Polls, Well, You Did Ask… explains how voters came to make the most momentous political decision of our time – how they saw the choice before them, what they made of the campaign, its personalities, claims and counterclaims – and why they ultimately chose to take the UK out of the EU. As the country sets about negotiating a new relationship with Europe, it also offers a colourful and revealing look at what our continental neighbours think about Britain and the British. To think clearly about what the referendum result means, we first need to understand how it came about. The answers are in this book.--

Minority verdict : the Conservative Party, the voters, and the 2010 election by Michael A Ashcroft( Book )

4 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 22 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Drawing on his unique perspective as the man responsible for the party's target seats and polling, the 132-page book gives Lord Ashcroft's view of the Conservatives' progress since their third defeat in 2005, the reasons for the party's failure to win an overall majority in 2010, and David Cameron's decision to form a coalition with the Liberal Democrats. Minority Verdict follows Lord Ashcroft's influential analysis of the 2005 election campaign, Smell the Coffee: A wake-up call for the Conservative Party, which called for the party to modernise and re-engage with voters having come to be seen as untrustworthy and out of touch. Lord Ashcroft said: "There has been speculation as to my view of the Party's performance in the election, and of David Cameron's subsequent decision to forge a coalition with the Liberal Democrats. By putting an end to speculation, Minority Verdict sets the record straight. This is a record of what I really thought at the time, and what I think now. And if there is to be a public debate about this subject, Minority Verdict represents my first and only contribution to it. I do not intend to comment beyond what is contained within its pages."

The armed forces and society : the military in Britain through the eyes of service personnel, employers and the public by Michael A Ashcroft( )

2 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 0 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

It is an appropriate time to take stock of our relationship with our Armed Forces and the men and women who serve in them. How do we in Britain see our military? Do we think Service personnel, and former personnel, get the recognition we believe they deserve? What is the perspective of those currently serving in the Forces, and those who have recently done so? What impressions do employers have of the kind of person they would be taking on if they hired someone leaving the Services? To explore these questions I have conducted a unique independent survey of military personnel, together with focus groups of members of the Army, Royal Air Force, Royal Navy and Royal Marines. Research was also carried out among former Service personnel, the general public, and those responsible for recruitment in small and medium sized businesses (which provide the bulk of jobs). Further focus groups among personnel in the US Armed Services and a poll of the American public have offered an instructive comparison for the way public support can find tangible expression
