Es geschah am 20. Juli( Visual )

3 editions published between 2001 and 2009 in German and held by 24 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This is the true saga of the anti-Hitler German Army officers' bomb plot of July 20, 1944 that almost killed Nazi Führer Adolf Hitler, and thus very nearly changed the course of World War II ... [In contrast to the reasons behind the plot given in the 2008 Hollywood feature Valkyrie, this film] reveals instead that it was to stop the loss of German lives and the destruction of Germany, and also not to continue the war to a successful conclusion. Thus, it is a more historically accurate film ... Much of the dialogue is lifted straight from historical records."--Container

"In 1930, Célestine, a 32-year-old chambermaid, takes a position at the Normandy estate of the Monteil family. She soon becomes well acquainted with the idiosyncrasies of the household. The elder Monteil is an affable, harmless boot-fetishist; his daughter is a sickly and frigid woman who conducts private 'experiments' in her room instead of maintaining sexual relations with her wastrel husband; the husband works off his excess energy by hunting and by trying to seduce the female servants; and Joseph, the gamekeeper and handyman, is a surly racist who delights in brutally killing small animals. Also on hand is a neighbor, Monsieur Rabour, a fascistic, retired military man who throws garbage into the Monteil garden to continue an old feud. One day the village is thrown into an uproar when the elder Monteil dies in his bed clutching his collection of boots; and a little girl whom Célestine had befriended is found raped and murdered. Célestine, despite her sexual attraction for Joseph, is certain that he is the guilty party and arranges for incriminating evidence to be found. The proof is insufficient, however, and the freed Joseph goes to Cherbourg to open a café. Left alone, Célestine settles for a life of bourgeois contentment by agreeing to marry Rabour." - American Film Institute Catalog of Feature Films
