So ist in Kenia auch die Mutter des Nilpferdbabys Owen ums Leben gekommen. Dorfbewohner und Touristen bringen das Tier, das auf einem Korallenriff gestrandet ist, mit viel Mühe an Land und übergeben es einem Naturpark. Dort bringt man Owen in ein Gehege, wo, nebst anderen Tieren, auch die hundertdreissigjährige Riesenschildkröte Mzee lebt. Owen läuft sofort zu der Schildkröte und kauert sich hinter sie, wie das kleine Nilpferde bei ihren Müttern machen. Obwohl die Schildkröte ihn anfänglich anzischt und davon kriecht lässt sich Owen nicht abschütteln und schliesslich akzepiert Mzee seine Rolle als Mutterersatz. Heute sind sie unzertrennlich, schwimmen zusammen, fressen zusammen und schlafen Seite an Seite. Und wenn Owen an Mzees faltigem Hals schnobert, geniesst der das richtig.
