Directing Remittances to Education with Soft and Hard Commitments Evidence from a Lab-in-the-Field Experiment and New Product Take-up among Filipino Migrants in Rome by Giuseppe De Arcangelis( )

12 editions published between 2014 and 2015 in English and Undetermined and held by 155 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This paper tests how migrants' willingness to remit changes when given the ability to direct remittances to educational purposes using different forms of commitment. Variants of a dictator game in a lab-in-the-field experiment with Filipino migrants in Rome are used to examine remitting behavior under varying degrees of commitment. These range from the soft commitment of simply labeling remittances as being for education, to the hard commitment of having funds directly paid to a school and the student's educational performance monitored. The analysis finds that the introduction of simple labeling for education raises remittances by more than 15 percent. Adding the ability to directly send this funding to the school adds only a further 2.2 percent. The information asymmetry between migrants and their most closely connected household is randomly varied, but no significant change is found in the remittance response to these forms of commitment as information varies. Behavior in these games is shown to be predictive of take-up of a new financial product called EduPay, designed to allow migrants to pay remittances directly to schools in the Philippines. This take-up seems largely driven by a response to the ability to label remittances for education, rather than to the hard commitment feature of directly paying schools
Economia internazionale by Giuseppe De Arcangelis( Book )

11 editions published between 2005 and 2017 in Italian and held by 52 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Intentions to return of undocumented migrants : illegality as a cause of skill waste by Nicola D Coniglio( )

5 editions published in 2006 in English and Undetermined and held by 21 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this paper we show that highly skilled undocumented migrants are more likely to return home than migrants with low or no skills when illegality causes skill wasteʺ, i.e. when illegality reduces the rate of return of individual capabilities (i.e. skills and human capital) in both the labor and the financial markets of the country of destination. This proposition is first illustrated in a simple life-cycle framework, where illegality acts as a tax on skills, and then is tested on a sample of apprehended immigrants that crossed unlawfully the Italian borders in 2003. The estimation confirms that the intention to return to the home country is more likely for highly skilled than low-skill illegal immigrants. The presence of migration networks in the destination country may lower the skill-waste effect. The empirical result of this paper contrasts with the common wisdom on return decisions of legal migrants, according to which low-skill individuals are more likely to go back home rather than highly skilled migrants

The Italian continuous time model results of the nonlinear estimation by Giancarlo Gandolfo( Book )

5 editions published between 1994 and 2008 in English and Undetermined and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Continuous-time econometric models (i.e., models specified as systems of stochastic differential equations) are by now well established both in theory and in practice. Several macroeconometric continuous-time models exist for various countries. Among these the Italian continuous-time model developed by Gandolfo and Padoan over the years is in its fifth version. It is a medium-term disequilibrium model of real and financial accumulation of an open economy capable of generating both long-run growth and cycles. It has been successfully used for various purposes, amongst which the determination of the exchange rate (where it has been capable of outperforming the random walk in out-of-sample forecasting experiments). Up to now, the estimates of the parameters have been obtained using a linearized version of the model. Although for simulation purposes the original nonlinear version can be (and has actually been) used, it would be highly desirable to obtain the parameter estimates through a nonlinear estimation method. Such a method has been made available recently by Clifford R. Wymer (1993a,b) through his ESCONA program. The purpose of this paper is to apply such a method to our Italian model, and to compare the results with those of the linear approximation
