Beyond the supersquare : art and architecture in Latin America after modernism by Antonio Bessa( )

13 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 904 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Beyond the Supersquare: Art and Architecture in Latin America after Modernism, which developed from a symposium presented by the Bronx Museum of the Arts in 2011, showcases original essays by distinguished Latin American architects, historians, and curators whose research examines architecture and urban design practices in the region during a significant period of the twentieth century. Drawing from the exuberant architectural projects of the 1940s to the 1960s, as well as from critically engaged artistic practices of the present day, the essays in this collection reveal how the heroic visions and utopian ideals popular in architectural discourse during the modernist era bore complicated legacies for Latin America--e consequences of which are evident in the vastly uneven economic conditions and socially disparate societies found throughout the region today"--Page 4 of cover

The book also features six art projects especially commissioned for the occasion: a series of large-scale color photographs by Jeff Chien-Hsing Liao; a timeline by Skowmon Hastanan; The Tree Museum, a project by Katie Holten on the green spaces along the Concourse; a three-channel Video by Pablo Helguera on three buildings along the Concourse, namely, Poe's cottage, the Paradise Theater, and the Freedman Home; a project by Kabir Carter about capturing sounds from different areas along the Concourse; and a special lobby installation by Acconci Studio."--BOOK JACKET
Lygia Clark : the abandonment of art, 1948-1988 by Cornelia H Butler( Book )

7 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 308 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Museum of Modern Art presents a major retrospective devoted to the art of Lygia Clark (Brazilian, 1920-1988), the first comprehensive exhibition in North America of her work. Lygia Clark: The Abandonment of Art, 1948-1988 comprises nearly 300 works made between the late 1940s and her death in 1988. Drawn from public and private collections, including MoMA's own, this survey is organized around three key themes: abstraction, Neo-Concretism, and the 'abandonment' of art. Each of these axes anchors a significant concept or a constellation of works that mark a definitive step in Clark's career. While Clark's legacy in Brazil is profound, this exhibition draws international attention to her work. By bringing together all parts of her radical production, the exhibition seeks to reintroduce her into current discourses of abstraction, participation, and a therapeutic art practice."

Novas : selected writings by Haroldo de Campos( Book )

A generous introduction to one of the key literary figures to emerge from Brazil in the second half of the twentieth century, this book offers English-speaking readers an ample selection of this prodigious writer's celebrated poetry and widely influential critical work. As a poet and as a cofounder of the renowned group Noigandres, Haroldo de Campos made a unique and substantial contribution to the theory and practice of experimental writing, particularly the form known as concrete poetry, and to the Latin American avant-garde as a whole. --Northwestern University Press
Gordon Matta-Clark : anarchitect by Gordon Matta-Clark( Book )

8 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 193 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This revealing book looks at the groundbreaking work of Gordon Matta-Clark (1943-1978), whose socially conscious practice blurred the boundaries between contemporary art and architecture. After completing a degree in architecture at Cornell University, Matta-Clark returned to his home city of New York, where he initiated a series of site-specific works in derelict areas of the South Bronx. The borough's many abandoned buildings, the result of economic decline and middle-class flight, served as Matta-Clark's raw material. His series 'Bronx Floors' dissected these structures, performing an anatomical study of ther ravaged urban landscape. Moving from New York to Paris with 'Conical Interserct', a piece that became emblematic of artistic protest, Matta-Clark applied this same method to a pair of seventeenth-century row houses slatted for demolition as a result of the Centre Pompidou's construction. This compelling volume grounds Matta-Clark's practice against the framework of architectural and urban history, stressing his pioneering activist-inspired approach, as well as his contribution to the nascent fields of social practice and relational aesthetics."
Öyvind Fahlström : the art of writing by Antonio Sergio Bessa( Book )

6 editions published in 2008 in English and Swedish and held by 154 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Oyvlnd Fahlstrom (1928-76), the Brazilian-born Swedish poet-artist, is one of the mid-twentieth century's most intriguing cultural figures. His work, as profoundly political as it is aesthetic, spans two tumultuous decades in the avant-garde and comprises concrete poetry, manifestos, plays, performance, filmmaking, paintings, multiple prints, sculpture, and installations. Initially poorly received in Sweden and little appreciated in the English-speaking world, Fahlstrom is now increasingly recognized worldwide for his role as one of the creators of concrete poetry." "Oyvind Fahlstrom: The Art of Writing serves both as an informative and entertaining introduction to the artist and as a valuable critical analysis of some of his most important works. Bessa focuses on how Fahlstrom's early experiments with concrete poetry influenced his later work in the visual arts and offers close readings of his seminal work Bord, his painting serles Ade-Ledic-Nander, his interactive painting The Planetarium (based on Nathalie Sarraute's novel of the same title), and his radio play Birds in Sweden. Bessa's Oyvind Fahlstrom is without precedent or parallel as an overview of Fahlstrom's art, an assessment of his place in twentieth-century cultural history, and an examination of trends and movements, such as concretism, in which he figures large."--BOOK JACKET

Poesia viva : Paulo Bruscky by Paulo Bruscky( Book )

1 edition published in 2015 in English and held by 62 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Paulo Roberto Barbosa Bruscky (b. Recife 1949) is a multimedia artist and poet. Bruscky, long considered a pioneer in mail art and Xerox art, has always stated that "poeisis" is at the core of his extremely diverse practice. A rebel poet of sorts, he has continuously sought to question the status quo through his art a thoroughly political aspiration during years of military dictatorship. Through a unique selection of Brusckyœs works, carefully chosen by editor Antonio Sergio Bessa and the artist, this volume shows the poetic basis of Brusckyœs longstanding interests in the metalinguistic and the performative, and explores Brusckyœs artistic debt to concrete poetry, and more specifically to the experimental work of the Brazilian Poema/Processo movement and the Poesia Práxis group. Paulo Bruscky: Poesia Viva investigates the poetic process and sensibility across five decades of Brusckyœs work

Öyvind Fahlström : mapas : exposição monográfica by Öyvind Fahlström( Book )

4 editions published in 2007 in Portuguese and held by 33 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

An analysis of the work of Öyvind Fahlström (Sao Paulo, Brazil, 1928-1976) who is simultaneously Brazil's most famous and least-known artist. Despite solo exhibitions in the major museums of the world: the Guggenheim, Moderna Museet, Centre Geoges Pompidou, and others, his work is virtually unknown in Brazil. This exhibition looks at an important aspect of his work: his use of maps. As a multicultural artist before that term was in bogue, Falström was actualy interested in and aware of his position in the world. Most of the works in this exhibition date from the 1960s and 1970s and reflect the tragic effects of the Cold War on the third world, and the the world map became ever more polarized
