Iphigenia in Tauris, a play in five acts by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe( Book )

16 editions published between 1880 and 1905 in German and held by 94 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This drama in blank verse, the first important work of Goethe's Classical period, stands the Iphigenia-Orestes story as treated by Aeschylus, Euripides, and Racine on its head. In Goethe's drama Iphigenia, daughter of Agamemnon, leader of the Greek forces in the Trojan War, in exile as a priestess in the barbaric land of the Tauri (Crimea), breaks the Tantalid family curse. She saves the life of her brother Orestes who has murdered his mother because she murdered his father. The female identity of the central character is all-important. It is uniquely her voice that brings resolution - not by preaching values but by the visceral force of belief in the rightness of the language of the heart. Translated from the German by Roy Pascal
Wilhelm Tell by Friedrich Schiller( Book )

22 editions published between 1871 and 1914 in 3 languages and held by 90 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"When Schiller completed Wilhelm Tell as a 'New Year's Gift for 1805' he foretold that it would cause a stir. He was right. In the midst of Great Power politics a play that drew substance from one of the fourteenth-century liberation movements proved both attractive and inflammatory. Since then the work has become immensely popular. This new English translation by William F. Mainland brings out the essential tragicomic nature of Wilhelm Tell but also emphasizes its impressive formal unity."
